I tried posting this question on dpreview, but no one had a response. So hopefully maybe someone here has had the same situation I do.

I have two Canon 580Exs and just bought the Metz 58 AF-1 flash. I decided to try out the Metz as the master, and the two canons as slaves. So far it seems to work out pretty nice. I like how Metz does the light balancing as opposed to canon's ratio method.

I am just curious, is there any reason why maybe using the canon 580ex would be a better option as a master?

Hmmm... this is a very good question. I didn't even know that the Metz (or any other flash) would work within Canon's slave system. So I'm curious, what is it about the Metz light balancing that you prefer?

I just seem to get more consistent shots and the light seems less harsh and evenly lit when compared to the Canon 580Ex. The Metz 58 AF-1 fully supports the Canon ETTL system, and it claims that if Canon ever updates their wireless system, you can update this one to match it by upgrading the firmware with your computer.

The only major difference between Canon and Metz is how it sets up the light ratios with slave groups. In fact, with Metz, you don't even use ratios. What happens is, the Metz flash(master) meters the scene, then you can set it to +/- stops on the A and B slave group. So if you wanted to shoot a portrait, you might have the Master be -2 for a fill shot, then the A group(left side) be -1 and the right side be 0, so get a nice light gradient across the face.

This is opposed to canon where you would set 1:2 or something like that.

I was just wondering if there are any major draw backs to the Metz way, since I am new to their system.
