Someone should go take a picture of Venus right now. I dont have a telephoto, so anything i would take wouldent be very noticeable. Anyways, Venus is so bright and is sitting nicely beside a beautiful cresent moon.

I saw it last night, and watch it for a long time.

I thought it was a plane as well, but it never moved. So, I blew it off for a ufo.

went to bed after that.

Check out SpaceWeather for detailed info on where to see the Venus/Moon spectacle:

When the sun sets tonight (Saturday, May 19th), go outside and
look west. Venus and the crescent Moon will pop out of the twilight barely
1-degree apart. It's a spectacular pairing of the two brightest objects in the night sky. The display will be visible from brightly lit cities and even through thin clouds.

I saw it too, my son said, "I saw the first star of the night!" I said, "No you didn't, that's Venus." I noticed how close it was to the moon. Thought about how cool that was... Then I came inside, to get on here, this is much cooler.

Did you use the 400 on that? Can you post the other settings?

Best I can do on short notice!
Shot through our pear tree, flash on, to help highlight the foreground to give some perspective, then again through our jakaranda (sp?) tree. Subtle colors peering along the borders in abstract.

Here's mine from Covington Louisiana. You can almost make out the "phase" of venus. I searched the net to see if I could find the current phase of Venus to verify my image. However, I could not find a site that had the phases in "real time".

Does anyone know if my phase is real?

I bumped this. Check out my shot...I think you can see the phase of Venus. However, I checked the web for a "current phase" and cannot find it. I'd like to know the current phase to see if I actually caught it with my lens.

Does anyone know what the current phase is?

Wow ...I think I got it....I found this website of the current phase.

Try this !

Click to Venus and put in 5/19/07. A map of current phase comes up! Looks like my image of the phase is real!

Here's mine.

EDIT:

Here is a shot from the website. I decided to paste it here so you wouldn't have to go to the site. However, the site is great. Check it out.

That USNO site is a great find. That's exactly the phase. Through the telescope, Venus would be painfully bright, but you would be able to make out the phase easily. This is my shot from a few years ago when I set out to specifically document the size and phase change over two months:

Venus will be doing exactly the same thing over the next two months if anyone wants to have a look every few nights. Really need a telescope though.

I managed to get a shot of the Moon and Venus together, I had to risk life and limb, but I think it was worth it. Any comments on the photo or my bravery??

What a great shot. So clear! What type of telescope did you use?

I copied one on Blue Peter TV Show, used three toilet roll tubes, some sticky back plastic and two milk bottle bottoms!! Pretty good, eh?? :)

Graham, looks like your shot used a longer exposure than any of the rest of us, but that's not a problem! You got the Earthshine on the moon and some very nice diffraction spikes on Venus. Yours is much more artistic and many would say, truer to what the eye saw. Very nice shot!
