It seems that every time I resize my images for the challenge, they get pixaly and have a general poor quality. What I am doing wrong? I am using the Microsoft software that came with XP. Any pointers?

I know, I know, but I am on a strict budget. Any software out there that is good and affordable?

You might try GIMP it's Free and I believe a number of people here use it.

Photoshop Elements comes free with many printers and cameras. Check the disks that came with your camera and/or printer. If you ask nicely, there might be people reading this thread who have one lying around that they're not using and they could send it to you...

you could also try Paint.net it also is somewhat ok as a free editor, I mite have a version of paintshop pro that came with my flash cards, but may take a few days to find in the heap of crap that I have all that stuff thrown on atm (office spring cleaning) Ill PM you if I indeed have it...

If I were you, I would go for GIMP. You can do a lot more than just resize.

Go to //gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html and download The GIMP and the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version 2.10.6, for Windows 2000 and newer). Install the GTK+ first.

There are a lot of guides, tutorials and how-tos for GIMP, and most of the times you can still follow material written for Photoshop. Of course it is not as powerful as Photoshop, but given that it is absolutely free you can't lose (-:

Thanks everyone for your comments & watch out next challenge - I may get a photo into the 5s! ;-) I am really excited to try out this software because I have been so frustrated with my previous results.

Other software that you might want to consider, if your main focus is on resizing rather than the full editing features you'd get from GIMP:

FastStone Image Resizer
IrfanView
Vallen JPegger
