Could someone explain to me the type of lens that is suitable for this camera. I know I can use some different lens I would just like to know more specifics on this camera. Thanks Wildirishman64

D40 cameras require you to use only AF-S or AF-I Nikkor lens

Most of the lenses designed by Nikon for its digital SLRs will work - but you need to check to make sure the lenses have internal autofocus as the D40 does not have a autofocusing motor on the body

Can I use a lens in manual mode?

Because the camera body doesn't have an AF motor in to it directly, your lenses will be limited to those that have an AF motor built into the lens itself. So, if you are in the market for an older lens set, you will be limited to manual focus.

May be you are new to DSLR or to photography.
But I´d made the same question as you do, in the past.
many great advices comes from the DPC community. But the time passes way and now I cam help you to choose your lenses!

I have only two questions for you! What king of pictures do you want? How is the places do you use your camera?

Any compatible lens are plenty of use! Not Only the AF-S but AFs and the old models too. But money/use of your equipment biased by your photography skills or uses are the real guide to you.

In some cases you will want some old lenses, by your unique features and low price. Some features are not so useful to seme kind of pictures. A landscape fotographer will not pay some attentions to AF features as a portrait.

Then my advice is choose lenses from features they have, like sharpness, apperture, image quality and other thinks that is usefull to your needs.

You can manual focus any F mount lens you want.

The only non AF-S lens I would consider if I had D40 is 10.5 fisheye. Everything else would be too much hasle to manually focus.
