I am with DPC for almost a year and seeing great shots and very talented people and then I was thinking about my self. I am an IT consultant for about 10 years and photography is my hobby (so far), I want to spend more time on this but not able to and by the time I am home, it is late and can not do much. Over the weekend, all weekend stuff for home and family...so overall its really tough for me to spend time on photography...I don’t have any complain with this life but I was wondering am I the only one in this situation or others too?? :)

If not then how do you managed to get such a nice shot?…I can not carry my camera all the time as I have notebook bag right on my shoulder all the time :( and when I see a nice shot, I feel why I did not have my camera with me :(:( now I am thinking to buy a small P&S camera so that at least I will not miss the shot :)

Nope, I guess it is the same for most people here, we all have real working lives and just fit photography in where we can. During winter I get very little chance to enter challenges, but I give it a go, hence my dismally low scores!!

Once in awhile I'll get a decent shot on the way to work, or on the way home (tripod stays in car - pack the camera in/out). I'll intentionally leave for work a little early to catch the sunrise sometimes.

Also on the weekends, get up early - head out and get some shots before everyone is up and about. Get home in time for breakfast and family. :)

Carry your camera with you at all times. I'm always kicking myself for those moments when I don't have my camera and see something that I want to shoot.

Last time his happened, I was heading to the post office to mail out the tax returns. I thought, "Ah, it'll be too dark to get anything interesting..." I walk out of the post office to see an unreal sky full of clouds and being lit by an orange and pink sunset. Grrrrr...

Like the ads say, don't leave home without it.

I should have also mentioned, it comes in handy keeping a change of shoes in the car as well. Sometimes the best shots come right after a storm and it can be quite wet/muddy.

No you are definately not alone. If I am lucky I may get some shots in over the weekend. It is too hard to do it during the week with work and kids soccer practices. Now I have a 13 year daughter who is getting in to photography and I am trying to teach what little I know so she can also submit to challenges. Sometimes I don't even get to my shot because her and I currenlty share my camera. She has been hounding me for one of her own. Maybe one day. Until then I keep my battery charged and my eyes open.

A P&S is a good idea, just in case. I have one, but I never get to use it...my wife has collared it and I see it twice a year if I am lucky :))

You're definately not alone. The tips about getting up super early sometimes and lunch-break pictures are vital. Do whatever you can to keep your camera close by...mine is in my car under a jacket. I've regretted not having it a time or two.

my camera is in my trunk all the time, if i see something i pull out take the shot then keep going :)
+whenever i have an hour or two to spare, even if i feel tired, once you start doing it, its quite liberating,
otherwise there is no chance in hell that i will have time to take pictures.

I'm exactly the same.

It is very tough to get the time. Even moreso if one has kids & such. I am lucky as where I work in bang in the middle of Epping Forest, so a 45 minute walk at lunchtime can produce some nice images. Good for the heart as well walking (especially when one has a 5D with Battery grip and 70-200 f2.8 slung around ones neck)..

I feel your pain when it comes to time mate. Summer is better due to the lighter evenings.

O.k. you guys are gonna get mad at me, I only work two days a week, and only for 6 hours each day at that, I love photography, I don't have any drive I guess. I always carry my camera every where I go,and if I see something I do stop and snap, I know for the time I have on my hands, my pictures should be great. So does this make me a lazy loser? :)

Nope...

IT person here...and suffer from the same problem. And when I do take photos, I hardly can offload them, process them and upload them for the challenges anymore.

hmmm...I wonder the same thing too sometimes. Mine hasn't started acting up yet but it's still relatively new and the Florida summers haven't quite gotten here yet.

I've heard of people keeping a cooler in their car to keep their equipment at a stable temperature.

I keep a disposable camera in a soft sided cooler in the glove compartment. A company I worked for handed them out for free but they're only a few dollars at a drug store during the summer. It's about the size of a lunch bag and folds up. I switch out the camera every year and the film seems to come out ok though I don't check every time. I would imagine it would be suitable for a compact digital but I would check the batteries much more frequently.

Nope, I miss my A200, I should get the sucker fixed :(

I shoot whenver I have time which is usually on the weekends and only then I usually have a plan as to what I want to shoot. I rarely take my camera with me otherwise probably because I'm the one doing the driving and I haven't perfected the "Brad Technique" yet which is driving with one hand and taking pictures with the other. :P

Sometimes I'll bring my camera to work, but rarely get the chance to use it. It's evenings and weekends for me. Especially weekends, and especially when I can be alone.
