How does it work?

Comments for a Cure is a month-long contest to encourage everyone to comment more, and at the same time to leave high-quality, constructive and helpful comments. The contest will run from 12:00:01 AM on May 4, to 23:59:59 on June 3, 2007.

At the end of the contest we will select 100 comments at random from all comments left during the contest period. This includes comments left on almost ANY photograph on the site, whether old or new, challenge entry or not!

Those 100 comments will then be reviewed by a panel of judges. Those judges will choose the best comment from among the 100 selected, and the author of that comment will win a gift certificate for a free 1 year DPChallenge membership! The gift certificate can be used by the winner or given as a gift, at the winner's discretion.

Who makes up the panel of judges?

frisca, karmat, nshapiro, sher and ursula will be the judges. I will break any ties.

Are there any restrictions?

Just a few. The judges can't enter, I can't enter, and comments left on our photographs won't be part of the contest. Comments you leave on your own photographs won't be counted either. Also, any time a photograph is removed from the site, so are the comments on that photograph, so any comments associated with a deleted photograph (such as a portfolio entry) also won't be counted.

Won't this encourage cut-and-paste comments?

Not likely. Keep in mind that there is a random selection aspect and a judging aspect. Someone who leaves a lot of short, generic comments might make it into the random selection of 100 comments, but those comments will be very unlikely to be selected by the judges.

Why is this called 'Comments for a Cure?'

I'm doing this to help raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. For the fourth year in a row, I am participating in the MS Challenge Walk, walking 50km to help strike out MS. I've set an ambitious fundraising goal of $2,500. All I ask is that if you receive an especially helpful comment this month, please do the following two things.

- Repost the comment here as a public "thank you" to the person who wrote it.
- Consider making a donation in support of the walk and the contest.

Thank you in advance for your donations AND your comments, and good luck in the contest!

~Terry

I really love seeing people with passions that move them to do something. I think that is all someone needs, a passion that moves them. There is something about human nature that I think needs that to feel complete.

$2.5k is a decent target - good luck! I'll try and squeeze in a few comments (and perhaps hope to receive a few).

Point One -- Okay, there are 32 days to go.

Point Two -- The critique club also has a Call to Arms.

Point Three -- Recently, my husband, in connection with some other issues, had to have an MRI to screen for MS. Even though the doctor was fairly certain he didn't have it, just having it as a possibility gave me teeny, tiny glimmer of insight as to why many people feel this is such a good cause, and why research to find a cure is critical.

Soooooooooo, here's the deal, for every day that the critique club queue is "0," I will donate $2.00 to Terry's fund. If it hits zero tonight, I will start counting my dollars immediately. I'll post the "Zero Days" in this post.

Saturday, May 6
Sunday, May 7

Thank you again for doing this Terry. I, and others who have this disease, are very very grateful!

I will pledge all proceeds from the sale of any of my prints to your walk.

Langdon tells me that DPCers made a total 48,280 comments in April.

For the duration of this contest, I will donate $0.001 for every comment made, to a maximum of $150. This means, for example, that April's comments would have been worth $48.28.

Let's see if we can set a record for most comments made in a month!

~Terry

ETA: If anyone else would like to make a per-comment pledge, please let me know and I'll make sure to get you the comment count at the end of the contest!

Shew, good thing I didn't commit to the 1 penny per comment thing, then, huh? :)

Indeed!

Though if we can get 10 people to offer 1/10ยข per comment, that'd be really awesome!

Cool, banmorn.

So, you can comment, pledge $ per comment, or join banmorn and myself and pledge for an empty critique club queue (doesn't have to be $2, could be a quarter).

Anyone else want to join?

I'd like to be #4 (my favourite number), but I'm wondering if it would be OK to cap it at $25 at this time. If someone else wants to offer a higher bid for #4, I'm fine with it. :)

You can... or, since we're almost certain to have at least 25,000 comments this month, you can also make a straight $25 donation if you prefer.

Either way, thank you!

Great job everyone I got back from the day out to bust a few more out and they are done! Way to go and thanks so much for the hard work. Terry I am going to up the ante a bit for your challenge. After the 3 rollovers we get this week if we get the Que back down to zero I'll send you a check for $10 and if it happens again the next week, same thing, every week through the month while the challenge is on. If we hit it every week of the month I'll kick in an extra $10 for a total of a possible $50 out of my pocket donation! So come on folks step up your critiques and make me open my wallet for something other then buying camera equipment!
