nice image for her twilight years ..

I wonder whether she used 2 exposures. One for the indoor scene, and one for the out side.

Or there may have been a softbox outside illuminating her more?

I was wondering the same thing.

I'll give her this...it's a very flattering image and it does the queen justice.

yeah I actually quite like it. Considering most of Leibovitz's stuff is rubbish

edit: I dont like her stuff as it is highly over rated. Still pretty good. Just not the best IMO

I don't necessarily agree with this statement.

... but the image is quite nice.

I wouldn't say rubbish.... she's not a bad photographer, but I do agree that she is a bit overrated.

I find the photo quite nice, actually. Don't usually follow AL's work much as not my bag, but this is actually very appealing. It flatters the Queen.

A lot of apples and oranges today. I shouldn't have to buy any for a while.

I too think she is a tad overrated but that's the way it goes - A lot of it is about getting noticed and then getting people to buy into it.
Still a nice portrait of the Queen - Better than her usual studio type shots. Only because I love environmental portraits as it gives us just a little glimpse into the surrounds of the subject.

Looking out the window while Rome burns (so to speak). Cromwell just did not do his job well enough, IMO. Oh yes, the photo's not so bad.

I think you're right about the rubbish part...mostly?
Just my opinion but a good deal of her images are a non-event...more matter of her subjects than her talent.

A number of her portraits, like the one of Meryl Streep are wonderful.

There was a Francesco Scavullo exhibit at the Gallery right downstairs from where I live, that I pass everyday. Looking at those images constantly over a two month period, it really, really hit home how much of a difference a celebrity subject can make...or simply someone who knows how to be in front of a camera. Immeasurable.

With an amazing model you can almost do no wrong.

I like the Queen image. I don't think it's an earth shaker but it says something.

I thought it looked like a "mature" Joey Lawrence-esque picture - like when Joey is about 30. :-P

Sadly, didn't do anything aesthetically for me although I could appreciate the technical bits.

Well everybody famous is overrated. Some just more then others. Obviously she has talent or people wouldn't still be after her. She has been a prominent figure in photography for years and years. Thats quite an achievement for getting by on who you know.

Isn't that how it is in most forms of professions and must I say...life?

I'd be careful giving credit to someone because of where they are or how much they make or whatever. There are millions of mediocrities floating around, making the front pages.

Trump, Paris Hilton, President Bush, David Hasselhoff, Jennifer Lopez...

Found a good quote characterizing many of AL's portraits

'...photography critic Vicki Goldberg remarks, "People do talk about . . . [Leibovitz's] story portraits. It's a story that's one sentence long. I really do think of them mostly as one-liners."...'

It is from this recent article in Boston Globe.

There is an exhibition of AL photos traveling around the country, I've seen it in San Diego last month. Among many technically flawless but boring "cover" shots are some really good portraits there, is it because of the photographer or her model or both is hard to say, but a genuine and engaging interaction between the two (which is the most important in a portrait IMO) was definitely there. And it is not easy to establish, especially when you deal with celebrities... Not that I would know, but I can imagine :)

I think calling Paris Hilton mediocre is awfully generous of you ;-)

some of liebowitz's work is pretty, and not that intellectually exciting. but some is absolutely stunning. especially her earlier work. surely everyone has a fluctuation in their work - not every single thing is fabulaous. it can't be.

this particular image of the queen is very good, from what i could see of it in the small image. i'll reserve most comments until i see a larger image. but i think ol' lz must be much happier with this than a lot of the recent portraits she's endured.

Thanks for posting Pete. I quite like the shot. It is elegant yet has a somber mood to it. Like we're getting a glimpse of a private moment with someone deep in thought and hint of the smile there :)

Just wanted to add...
BBC online has posted a nigher res shot //newsvote.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6614187.stm?dynamic_vote=ON#vote_new_hys_queen2

I agree with this. IMO her earlier work is much more exciting than her more recent work, much more alive and vibrant.

Like anyone, Liebowitz has great work, good work, not so good work, and horrible work.

Like everything, these will be determined differently by the individual that views them.

Like anyone, she probably made her mark through a combination of hard work, luck, and talent.

Like everything, people will enjoy it for what it is, not enjoy it for what it isn't, love it out of worship/popularity/etc, or hate it out of spite/jealousy/etc.

Liebowitz is just a woman doing what she loves to do, and happened to get famous for doing so. Whether or not she's underrated, overrated, talented, not talented, has connections, works her ass off, or whatever other kind of label we'd want to throw at her, she's a photographer making a living doing the thing she enjoys the most. For that, I applaud her, and anyone else that can bridge the gap.

Amen to that.
