Today after inspecting the plants in my garden, which I've been worried about because of the recent cold weather, I went through my front door for the first time in probably three weeks. I used to go out there a lot more, but I quit smoking and usually go out the garage all other times because I'm driving the car.

And boy was I surprised when I bird flew right in front of my face!

But not as surprised as I was when I looked closer and saw......

I know they're totally horrible pictures, but we have a bird's nest in our wreath!!! The funny thing is that there's a fake one on the wreath too :-) Now we just have to keep people from using our front door. Especially once these little guys hatch!

Or maybe the flew down here to take part in the orgy.

I suppose it amuses me most because it's a new house and we don't even have any trees yet! It's the only place these little guys *could* lay eggs!! Just never thought about it.

Those eggs look weensy - is it a hummingbird's nest? Or were you able to tell what it is yet?

Well, it was some kind of finch that flew away. Judging from the ones that are voraciously eating seed out of our back deck feeder, I would say we're due for some Purple Finch babies in a few weeks.

Does anyone know how long it takes birds to hatch??

not sure, but get ready for a HUGE mess when they do.
You'll have loads of bird poo for awhile. Just warning you.

Chickens and ducks take about 21 days.... your birds are smaller so I would say a few days less than that..... assuming you know when they started sitting on them.

Right outside my bathroom window is a cardinal nest. I have spooked mom off the eggs twice now, not knowing she was down there. There is a robin on a ledge by my daughters window. My daughter complains that she gets woke up WAY early by her chirping! lol That nest looks natural in the setting like it was designed for it. How pretty.
Did you see the purple finch on the nest? I believe robin eggs are blue.

My husband's not too excited about the poo factor, but still is sweet enough to think the whole thing's pretty cool.

Yeah, we've seen the finch sitting on the nest-definitely momma finch. The eggs are mostly whitish really...not nearly as colorful as robin's eggs, which I just love!

Make sure to keep us posted once the babies hatch. If you hang out there, the mom might get used to your presence and not freak out when you point a camera at her. Especially if she catches on that you are the source of food.

A Dove "couple" hatched and almost raised their babies in my hanging basket outside my bedroom window. It was a drama filled couple of weeks. A Crow stole one of the babies and injured the other other one which ended up getting knocked out of the basket and on to my deck. I hid him under a deck table and the parents continued to feed him until he flew away. I have a better quality photo of the baby grown up but not with me here at work so I'll try to post it later.
