Savanah (my oldest daughter) has the worst car-carma on the planet.
She's 17 and on her 3rd car. A bit ago she called to say the hood flew open while she was driving home from work, shattered the windshield and could I come get her.
No kidding, it didn't look like this when she left today:

3rd car in under 2 years! The first one was totaled when it got bumped in JUST the right spot by a friend in the school parking lot. Second one she drove with no water in it until she killed the motor. Now this one has had a Savanah thrashing. I think the kid needs a bicyle!

Yes, a used Schwinn would be appropriate for her.

"3rd car in under 2 years!"

Yeowch! My parents had three sons, and we each totaled one of their cars for them, but that was over the course of a decade. Definitely sounds like it's time for Savanah to get a bicycle.

I'm adding this to the list of references to provide to my family the next time they give me hell about not having kids. Don't you just love teenagers? ;)

Which is probably why my parents didn't buy their kids cars and usually didn't knowingly let us drive theirs.

I'm with ya. Teenagers shouldn't drive until they can afford to buy, maintain, and replace their own vehicles.

Indeed! Her dad says he'll buy a new windshield, but he's not going to replace the hood. She'll just have to drive it with a bungee holding it shut until SHE can afford another car!

That sounds like proper discipline ... of course, it would have carried more weight if this wasn't the THIRD car ... But then, my parents were educated to become ministers or missionaries, so they may have instilled in me some stricter sense of economy and caution ...

well I don't know if a bungee is a good idea either, sure they stretch and stuff but they can also wear out and I have seen more than one where the ends have straightend out. I'm sure it is obvious but if she is going that route, make sure it is a good strong one that can take the constant strain the wind under that hood is gonna cause.

Have you been able to determine why the hood flew up in the first place? Maybe a manufacture defect or just personal neglect? If a shop didn't close it correctly you might be able to have them cover the cost but I don't know. good luck

My first 4 years of driving (Im 21) 0 Accidents. Had some cop trouble for the first year but the past 3 years nothing... until recently.

As far as the civic goes I can fix that, cheap too! Windshield would cost me 60 to 75 bucks, plus materials to install. The hood is cheap too can get one for 30 bucks but unless i find one in that color it would cost about 300 to properly surface and paint, 100 but i mean 100 dollar paint jobs are just that lol they match and a year later they come off.

Youd also want to install a new latch would get that new not junkyard. Also would want to take a look at the hinges possibly damaged.

Anyways yeah that sucks my friend shana had a 91 Civic with 285,000 miles on it original motor 3rd transmission. The ultimate beater.

In all seriousness
In alls eriousness if you can find a used windshield and have a shop install it properly it can be cheaper then the 300 a new windshield migth cost. Around here we can get windhsields for 60 bucks from Crazy Ray's. The dealership uses them all the time. You still have to pay someone for time and materials.

I said bungee, but its actually a tie-down strap that we put on it for now, its very secure. I'll keep an eye on it, and replace it if it looks worn.
Best guess is she didn't latch it well enough this morning when she checked water & oil before work. We're having a really windy day, that may have had something to do with it, but I'm guessing it was just a blonde moment.

My oldest totalled the same car twice! Then managed to remove various mirrors and things in minor incidents. Somehow a car held together with duct tape doesn't look trustworthy :-D

We breathed a sigh of relief when she passed it to her brother (mind you, *I* technically own the thing, and paid to get it roadworthy for him). Not that he's perfect; he totalled my van a year and a half ago ::: sigh ::: But he knows that if he totals "his" car we're not paying to repair it, and neither is the insurance company. So far, so good ;-)

Ah, well, it's good to remember that cars are replaceable but kids aren't!

Hey, at least I know the defects in the kids I produced LOL! Not sure I want to take a chance on someone else's!

Actually, my parents agree with you too. Each of us boys did save up, buy, and maintain our own vehicles. We were just nice enough to total the parent's car instead of our own. (Except for the youngest, who managed to total one of each.) My accident happened while I was ferrying family back and forth from church in my dad's car. So there you go! ;)

Edited to add:

BTW - My parent's rule was always that after we got our license we would get very limited use of the family car, dependent on good behavior. (And it was very limited, thus the incentive to go get a job and purchase our own.) If we bought our own car, mom and dad would carry the insurance on their account until and unless we did something that raised their rates. Then we were cut loose and had to pay our own freight. Gas and upkeep were always our own responsibility, and even when we took the family car out the toll was always to bring it back with a full tank.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, all three of us boys managed to wreck (pun intended) our insurance privileges with accidents and speeding tickets, but none of the girls ever had a problem. Also, only one of the girls ever felt it necessary to get her own vehicle before she left home.

Are you referring to trying to replace them or trying to HAVE them? ;)

Reminds me of my little brother's first accident. Sunday morning, he's in a cutoff Led Zeppelin t-shirt and shorts and makes a quick trip to 7-11 to get cigarettes. On the way home he has to stop and wait for traffic to make a left. A car comes up behind him and never even hits the brakes, just smashes right into him. Driver is on the way home from church with wife and now-hysterical kids. Policeman shows up seconds later and the other guy wastes no time explaining that the derelict teenager stopped with no signal and no warning and what could he do? Turns out the cop had been going the other way and passed my brother waiting for his turn ROFLOL!! My parent's car was totalled but at least the right person had to take the blame! It ain't always the kid's fault ;-)

That is ***so*** not happening here! The next descendant to appear in my immediate family will be a grandchild of some sort.

Oh, it was my fault alright. I had run back home to get something my mom left behind and after I delivered it to her I decided to go joy riding instead of heading off to Sunday School like I was supposed to. Ironically, the accident probably happened because I was trying to make my Dad's boat of a Buick take turns like my little Volkswagon Dasher could. Crossed the center line and clipped an oncoming car. Accident was bad, and it was lucky that no one got seriously injured. Scared the @#$% out of me and instantaneously corrected all the bad driving habits I had been accumulating. Never been in another accident since then, and only one ticket in the intervening twenty years.

Been driving the family auto for awhile and havn't gotten in one accident. It's not a matter of age, but resposibility

sweet jiminy crickets cindi, that girl has some bad auto mojo floating around; take her to the nearest voodoo priestess and have that mojo exercised.

It's good that she's ok, the "Hood Flying Up and Hitting the Windshield" trick really sucks.
