I am interested in people's opinions on the mechanisms for opening tripod legs.

I've had both the twist collars and the latches. I always thought the twist collars were more trouble. My current low end lightweight tripod has twist legs, where you basically can just twist the leg and it unlocks it completely, allowing you to pull it out and extend it fully. I think that's a great idea, though in practice, I find myself not twisting it enough and then the leg not actually "locking".

Before I buy my next tripod, I'm curious what other nice ideas people have seen in leg extensions, and how they work for them in practice? I'd love to find something that opens quickly, and easily, and locks well.

So what have you found that you think is a good idea works well?

my monopod has twist (i hate them ) but i think its the best for a monopod ..
of the two manfrotto
one has 90deg twist tabs to tighten the collar / seems to always work
the better one has large tabs to tighten the collar - work really well but seem to get caught on things & undo themselves :(

My tripod allows me to pull (to extend) at any time. No twist, no latch, just pull. To shrink the legs back up, there's a latch at the very top which basically enables all sections of that leg to be pulled back up.

So extending is very quick, one leg at a time. And if I want to shrink the whole thing, I just put all 3 legs together, press all three buttons at the same time, and push down. So it's even faster to shrink it! (and when I'm done, I just stop pressing the buttons and it immediatley locks)

That sounds pretty much ideal, which brand and model is it?
