What would be a good replacement for a Canon 80-200 Telephoto lens?

My girlfriend put it into her front pouch pocket when we went out to take pictures of the trees with flowers on them, and somehow it has disappeared. I am thinking she set it on top of the car and we drove away leaving it to fend for itself out in the elements. Probably broke when it hit the ground (if that's where it went). I don't know?

Do you think I should replace it with another or something else all together? Thanks for your comments.

teh 80-200...was it a 2.8, the 'magic drain pipe?'
If so, then the 70-200 2.8 for $1000 or better yet, the IS version for $1700.

There is an F4 for $550ish and an IS version for $1000.

How big was the one she lost?

Well it wasn't that expensive. It was Canon EF 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens. I think I payed around $100.00.

Has anyone used one of those reflective mirror telephoto lenses that are like a telescope?

There is one on this page at Opteka Mirror Lens

Scroll down a bit.

Slow, soft, and weird bokeh comes to mind with those types of lenses.

I've had the canon 100-300 for about 8 years now. Decent quality and you can prob pick one up on ebay for well under $200

I have been using this lens for a while. It is more than $100, but is good for most general shots. I find that it is a bit softer than I would prefer, but it was my first lens, and I got what I paid for.

The sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO (must be the APO) version is good. More than $100, but it's got more reach.
I googled the lens you lost and it seems to still be available, but a $110 lens I'd be suspicious of the quality.

Yes, as soon as possible. GF's like that can become costly. Be thankful that it was only a 80-200L.. This time.

I think the 650-2600mm Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT XTi is to cheap to be true. If you go that way let us know, I'm interested

I second Prof_Fate with the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO Macro, but make sure it is the APO model, it is a much sharper lens than the older DG model.

It was NOT the L model, but the $110 4-5.6 lens. I didn't know they made one.

She found It! I don't have to buy a new one. Thanks for suggestions.
It somehow found its way into a plastic bag. I searched the car and so did she but then found it one week later. Gee-Whiz.
