Yes. Philadelphia has had Eagles football for years, but it hasn't been home to Bald Eagles in over 200 years. In February, a nesting pair of Bald Eagles was spotted in a tree in the former Philadelphia Navy Yard (coincidently within minutes flight of Philadelphia Eagles football stadium).

The Eagles' arrival hasn't been without incident, however, since their nesting site is next to a propose development project that already has other controversy surrounding it. The Fish and Wildlife Service has created a 600-foot buffer zone to protect the birds.

All I can say is WOOHOO! I have Eagles in my backyard!

So, in honor of these new arrivals, show us your Birds of Prey!

I wonder if the eagles get startled in south philly by the planes flying over to PHL.

Either way, really cool that they're here. Thanks for posting!

It's a pretty quick descent, so I'm thinking the noise is not a big factor. The article I was reading suggested that development might still be possible without disturbing them and that's pretty loud at times. I'd hate to imagine one of them getting into the landing path, though.

Anyone know what exact spot they're in? I work at the 'yard, so one day I took a drive with my camera as far east as I could get before hitting the restricted access signs. I saw something that looked like it may be an eagles' nest, but not entirely sure it was it.

_eug: One article I read stated that the FAA ruled to remove the nest in one of the cities the eagles settled in, because an eagle ended up getting into an airplane's flight path. Those planes do come in pretty low overhead, too.

We'll see what happens with the construction, I'm rooting for the eagles ;)

The story I originally got this from is in the South Philly Review, and states, "However this jubilation has the flip side of a development's roadblock. The nest is on a parcel of land owned by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and is adjacent to another piece where the state anticipates to Food Distribution Center to stand. The latter is owned by the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp."

Another story I read stated that regardless of how the parcel is developed by the state or the Port Authority the land was going to need to be built up using Dredged materials from the Delaware River due to the low level in that area.

You could try contacting, Doug Gross, who is the PA Game Commission specialist quoted in the article. Hope that helps some, but it's all I got.

Not an eagle, but a raptor.
