i'm looking to upgrade my monitor, but need to be able to run it at 1280x1024 or similar @ 32bit color. this one from viewsonic will meet that spec - supposedly. but i am skeptical it will not flicker when set at the max resolution. at least that's what i have found with CRT's.

anyone care to clue me in. i'm not looking to spend a ton of money as the CRT i am using now is hanging in there. it is from 1996 though - and has been with me through about four or five PC upgrades...

Looks like a good monitor, I had a 17 inch viewsonic that worked well.
Just a thought though, Best Buy has one on sale this week for $219, Samsung with a 2ms refresh amd 3000:1 contrast ratio... They say the higher contrast ratio is great for graphic and photography work... Oh 19 inch widescreen. I'm thinking of picking one up myself, I'll let you know how it works out if I do.

Just a quick FYI.
Try to buy any electronic device from Costco first. they have a satisfaction guranteed warranty for something like 7 years. No questions asked, no receipt needed. You can bring anything back for any reason and get a full refund. buy a monitor from them, in 2 years when the newest and greatest come out, return the one you got and buy the new one. You will never have an electronics device become obsolete.

I just bought a 22" LG LCD monitor w/ 3000:1 for $325.

looks to be that 800:1 is the same as 3000:1 depending on what spec you're looking at. based on the link sher posted anyway.

are you running them at the highest res the specs say they are capable of?

LCD monitors don't flicker. That's one of their strong points. I'm running the VP930b ViewSonic and it's a pretty nice monitor.

For a little more, you could get something thats more close to graphics professional quality like this.

I just don't see an 800:1 contrast ratio really comparing to a quality CRT, and I think you'll notice the difference and be disappointed. I notice the difference every time I go to work and look at any of my pictures there.

That Samsung is a TN panel (as is the Viewsonic), not good for photo work.
Fine for gaming since it's fast but this panel is only 6 bit colors - 226,000 or so colors versus true 16.7 million displayed on an 8 bit panel.
Also make sure you can adjust the brightness DOWN enough.
300 cd/m^2 is too high.
90-150 or so is best for photo editing.
The Sammy 205BW is a good deal 205BW

thanks for the input. not sure about the bit depth.

i bought this. i have two weeks to try it out. i think i have it calibrated - at least as good as my CRT. 22" widescreen - 16.7 million colors - 3000:1 contrast ratio. the samsung 226BW was $40 more with the same specs i think.

It's a TN panel, 6 bit so to display the 16.7 million it employs dithering (hi frc).
Supposedly the new tech on the TN panels gets close to true 8 bit depth but would think you are still losing something until I saw a side by side.

Looks like a pretty good deal though.

would that samsung have been a better purchase though - deals aside ?
no sense keeping this if my ancient CRT is gonna perform better.

i don't know all the ins and outs of these things, the F-engine is the dithering you're talking about? color support says '24bit ( 16.7 mil colors ).

this was one piece of an ongoing upgrade. i could funnel the money into a main board and cpu if my CRT is worth hanging on to...
