Okay, so last week I took a couple (Katie and JD) out to a local Farm to take engagement pictures. I gave them a little over a hundred to choose from, and asked them to pick their favorites. Then, based on what they picked, I would put together some "sample wedding invitations" to give them IDEAS on what I could do for them.

So, just to share... here are the ones I came up with tonight:

- -

- -

- -

All of these are done fairly quickly with Fotofusion. None of them are templates, each one was designed tonight by just dragging and dropping pictures together. I tell them to look for the background images they like, adjust/rearrange/pick other photos for the insets, pick the lettering style and colors they like. Basically, "mix and match" based on these samples.

David, those are simply amazing! Very nice work on all of them. I read your note in your portfolio about this program a while ago and have been contemplating purchasing it myself. You have put it to reallly good use here.

Thanks.

I personally don't feel that I am the "creative type". And so a product like Fotofusion which lets me rapidly "play" with the images, works well for me. I realize, none of these are perfect as they are, but the amount of time required to generate them is minimal. After they tell me what they like, that's when I'll put the time in to edit the actual pictures and fine tune the arrangement.

I print them as 5x7s (my cost is 39 cents each), so I don't have to charge the couple very much. And since the entire invitation is contained on the photo (and being a 5x7, the writing is very much legible), all that's left for them is to stick the pictures in an envelope, address it and put a stamp on it. I know it's not fancy, but it's certainly cost effective.

You might recognize the image from the Color Portrait challenge. I had hoped for a higher score on that image. Oh well, that's the way it goes. :-(

Hehe... He just HAD to do it! I thought it was pretty cool of them that this was one of the images they picked as possible wedding invitation photos. It really shows their playfulness.

Wow! Those are amazing looking invitations! Before I finished reading the thread, I told my partner how much nicer they look than all the ones I'd received and that maybe that was because this was an expensive service. To hear how reasonable the costs are, too...! Very impressive! What a lucky couple!

Mark my vote for this one:

It's warm and natural.
Not sure the color of the lettering is right for it, but that's just me.

I was immediately drawn to this one:

I don't know if it is because I am a huge fan of b/w or not. The main photo, as well as the side photos are all amazing also.

I like this one the best , but I would have to agree with Brad about the lettering color. I think I would prefer to see a goldish color. That's my two cents! :)

Thanks for all of the input.

The couple will drive the process at this point... the colors, fonts, image selection. My only intention is to spark their creativity by offering up so many different ideas. So it'll be interesting to get their input. If they respond in a timely manner, I may post back with their results. :-)

If you number the photos:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

my favorites are 4, 6 and 7.

Just my two cents,

I'm going to have to say that the last one really stands out to me as the "winner". They're all great, but that one seems to have a little bit of everything. Great work!

By far my favorite.

Just an update... this is the invitation they decided to go with. It comes pretty close to matching #4, but with changes as requested by them, (actual text, image swapping, plus the photos are now edited).

Really great photos - nice job!

Personally, I don't really like those with a main image and smaller images embedded - they don't look as professional (to me) and just look a little cluttered.

The exception is JD04 where the main image is a silhouette so the embedded images don't interfere with it. That said I'd still go for the silhouette on it's own over the way it is now.

My other favourite is JD07 - I think the photo itself is charming and I like the background, the way the composition gives good space for the text. Overall a great invite, in my opinion.

This probably won't change your mind, but might.. Whenever I'm doing these kind of invitations, I always tell them that they have to be 5x7" prints. The reason is to make the text and images large enough to be seen, especially by older folks who may have a harder time seeing small text.

I've sold all kinds... from single images (they put into their own invitation) multiple image collages with or without invitation text. I throw out my suggestions based on what they've expressed interested in and let them decide what they like best.

In this case, they happened to agree with you on the silhouette picture. That was their favorite. They still liked having the other images in there (and had a hard time deciding, we tried a couple of iterations). I think the nice thing about the embedded images is that it shows a little more of their personality. And that's what I tend to shoot for when doing engagement pictures (less posing, more personality).

I do appreciate the feedback. :-)
