Later this year or early next year i'm off to Peru. Can anyone who has been tell me how safe it is and what things to be wary of?
I really want to take my camera but if i'm going to feel scared to use it then i may aswell buy a cheapish compact and just take that.

What experiences have people had?

Cheers.

My mom just came back and had a wonderful time. Don't think that she felt threatened or in danger at all. The best thing to do is contact the state department and ask them your questions, as they have statistics on crime, what to look out for etc.

I personally would have no problem taking my full set of gear to peru, based on what my mom told me.

I was in Peru last Sept ... Lima is a bit scary unless you're in the "Mira Flores" district ... coming right out of the airport was a total adventure ... I've heard stories (didn't witness this) ... that locals will walk up to a taxi window, smash it and take the belongings sitting on people's laps ... I didn't really feel unsafe in Mira Flores, but was pretty careful with my camera ... then we flew to Cusco and hiked the Inca Trail ... Cusco is amazing and never once did I feel unsafe ... the Peruvian people in Cusco were very warm and friendly ... I had my camera out all the time and never had any issues ...

Have a great time ... Peru is amazing ...

I've not been to Peru, but I have spent a lot of time in Ecuador, felt pretty safe most of the time even when I did feel like I stood out quite a bit.

My thoughts when traveling tends to go along the lines that you're camer isn't doing you any good if you don't have it with you. I would bring it.

well i live here in peru, about your question, well i can say that lima is like mexico city but smaller. You have to take care about your eqiupment specially downtown and such places, the bad thing is that the downtown is amazing to take pics. the best time is in the morning.

you just need to be aware and nothing will happend, the thiefs allways looks for people who are distracted.

the good thing is that you nikon is quite small and will not atract a lot of attention. of course be with someone all the time.

The cities:

miraflores: is very safe but nothing very interesting photography speaking ( i live there :) )

Downtown: is safe at mornings try to avoid alleys with no people , amazing palce to take pics

Barranco: i very cool to take pics is, is the bohemain district. not that safe as miraflores

cusco: you all know it

Just dont act like new turist when you come :)

and sorry about me english

I sure wish I'd known you were in Peru when I was there last Sept ... would have loved to see more of Lima, but was told to mostly stay in Miraflores because it wasn't very safe to go wandering around on my own ... wish I could go back and see more of it ... Peru is a beautiful country ...
