Please help again- ia m stuck with the lens choice, I need a zoom for wildlife with macro capabilities. Budget is limited so please dont suggest anything fancy. I could shortlist three and would appreciate if any of you can share your experiences/expertise on this

1. Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM EF Lens

2. Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

3. Tamron Zoom Telephoto AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

I have #2 (the EX version) ... and have been pretty happy with it ... in low light situations the autofocus can go into hunt mode(that gets slightly irritating)... I don't have experience with either of the other choices you have listed ...

I have number 2 myself as well. (the Nikon version). Its pretty good bang for the buck. As Pamelasue mentioned, it does have a little trouble focusing in low light situations. Because the lens is so big too autofocus really kills the battery quickly. However, I think you would experience that with the other two lenses anyways.

I have the tamron one(#3) and I absolutely hate it. It's so soft. If you're on a budget and don't plan on making prints, I guess it wouldn't be that bad, but it makes a much better doorstop. I can't say for the other two, though. I hear decent things about the sigma and the canon.

That Canon is pretty low-end. The Canon 70-300 is MUUUUUCH better, but also more expensive. You might still find some IS versions of the 75-300 if you look around. Adorama had used/demo ones when I looked last week.

I have no 2 on my 20D and my buddy has no 3 (with IS) on his. We shoot wildlife regularly and I am regularly reminded of the difference in focusing speed Canon lens beigh better. Especially when trying to shoot birds in flight.

There was a publicised issue with his regarding soft focus in portrait mode, and Canon replaced his lens.

His doesn't do Macro, but the macro on the Sigma doesn't come close to his dedicated prime macro lens.

I went for the 70-300 for wildlife, then wanted more reach so I got the 170-500 Sigma. I am selling them both and getting the 50-500 (Bigma) and the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM MACRO.

Good luck!
