One kinda looks like a viewfinder of old. Prices look
pretty good. Wonder how they'll do.

The still image camera market is especially cutthroat and a lot of well known camera names of old have long since fallen by the wayside.

Can a newcomer make it? Maybe. Maybe not. Since the president of this 'newcomer' was the president of Olympus, one of the fallen, it is doubtful. But stranger things have happened. :)

You have to admire the chutzpah of GE to enter the P&S market now, when the high margins have all but evaporated and there's nothing left but volume to drive profits. Still, if anyone can pull off a success, GE probably can. Their tremendous experience in driving down costs in the supply chain will do them in good stead here. They also have the technology portfolio to support this endeavor. I wouldn't count them out. I do scratch my head over the timing of the decision, and I really do wonder what they see in that market that makes it attractive enough to jump into as a start-up?

There are always dissenters. :)

Look and you will see that out of about 50,000 DPCers there isn't a single owner of a newer model Olympus digital camera. The owners are a mixel bag of older model Olympus camera, the largest has a 3.2 megapixel CCD.

Not to says that DPCers are the end all of the digital camera world, but I suggest that as a group they represent what is an is not 'alive and well' in the digital camera world. Olympus is not among them. Olympus still exists and has offerings but they are not selling well.

Olympus used to be a standout brand of camera. It isn't any longer.

It does! I did not see it in the list of Olympus cameras. I will have to go back and see why. :)

Perhaps if I'd learn to read it would help. LOL!!!

Olympus has more individual camera offerings on DPC than both Canon and Nikon combined, though most of them are very, very low end. The EVOLT-E500 is the most popular higher end Olympus camera at DPC with about 300 owners.

Overall there might be 2,000 Olympus owners at DPC. That compares with
7-8,000 Nikon owners and 15,000+ Canon users (and far more of them are higher end cameras than Olympus at DPC)

I stand corrected. Olympus is still hanging in there and certainly qualifies as being alive and well.

My appologies to any Olympus users who I might have offended.

click fix

I have a lot of GE stuff...... stove, fridge, credit card. Now they
offer a still camera. I wonder if they will take my credit card.

I don't know about you, but that new Oly P& S with 18X optical zoom and dual IS is looking like a fun gadget camera to have. And it is even more enticing to me cause it looks like a camera and not one of those retangular boxes like my oly C750.

Okay, so it's not Nikon or Canon. But it's a decent representation and showing. Not quite dead yet. They're feeling better.
