I just got a Dell XPS and I need to set the gamma for the screen, what is the best way of doing this. The last set of photo's I sent in were way too dark, which means my monitor is set too bright. I have used quick gamma in the past but if I set contrast to all the way, as they suggest, the screen is way out of whack.

Look here. More information than you probably wanted, but:
- about halfway down the page is a good gamma pattern. Adjust it to 2.2
- before you do this, adjust your black point
- repeat the above process if you make really large changes the first time, since adjusting one affects the other.
You cannot go wrong following the instructions on this page, Mr. Koren really knows his stuff.

Resurrecting this thread for a quick question; Should I set Gamma on my iMac to 1.8, 2.0, or 2.2 ?

I'm reading conflicting advice on the web; The iMac is set to 1.8 by default. I've changed it to 2.0 which seems to be more photo-friendly. However, 2.2 is far too dark, imo.

Bump.

Gamma 1.8, 2.0, or 2.2 on Mac?

I'm on a PC but from what I have read on many sites, you should be at 2.2 even for Macs. I think it's only older Macs that are or should be at 1.8.

Thanks. That's what I read as well. But 2.2 would mean the blacks on the DPC calibration bar would be indistinguishable. I think I'll leave it at 2.0 as a compromise.

On my Cinema monitor, I calibrated it with the Eye One, using 6500 (degrees), gamma at 2.2 and Luminance up to 130, along with the adobe1998 profile. My blacks are fine throughout the "test strip" You may need to bump up your brightness a bit (with the 130 luminance-the Brightness bar is about at 3/4). My prints are spot on to the monitor.
