I'm wondering if you have free websites, or if you have to pay a monthly fee to have them hosted somewhere...or how does that all work?

I'm just looking for somewhere to put some of my pictures that isn't on one of the photo sharing sites like yahoo, shutterfly, or something of that sort.

any suggestions???

Who's your internet service provider (ISP)? Most ISPs come with web space for a site, but you have to produce the pages yourself (easy to do with a web package). Strictly for hosting photos, it's hard to beat services like Smugmug and pBase.

Ok, I'm a computer dope, so do you mean Firefox? Or Roadrunner?

Roadrunner will be your ISP. ^_^

If your ISP does not provide free space, webhosting is very cheap these days. All you gotta do is get a domain name and web space and you're set. If you want you can use an open-source flash/php gallery on your site and you'll have a professional looking album in no time. Very easy to setup.

Check out Host Gator.

Would you mind posting the link to your "one" website? I would love to see it to get an idea of what it would look like.

Also, do these sites help you through the set up? I would have NO Idea how to make a website once I pay for it.

I use //www.smugmug.com and my site is //www.lamontphotography.com it is run or hosted by them I pay around 100 or more a year I think now its 150 a year for new customers. Only that much if you want the professional level there you can customize it the way you want. But they also take care of any sales I do and printing. Also unlimited storage I get for my photos. They also have a forum called //www.dgrin.com for any help you may need and they usaually help you out right away. For my website name thats only a few bucks to have my own personal website name and I pay that to bigdaddy.com

I have a cable modem with our local cable company. I found out (a while ago) that if you just pay for the cable modem, you also get basic cable (since they really can't block the signal). The cable company finally got wise to this and offered free basic TV with a cable modem.

I don't have a static IP, but it rarely changes (once or twice a year). I have my own web and database server in house. It's pretty neat since I get to play with the settings. The only problem is when the power goes out and I forget to turn the systems back on. I mainly have snap shots up. I'd post the url here, but I'm afraid of the traffic.

we use a combination of hostway (about $13/mo) for our web hosting and smugmug ($145/yr) for our online albums for (some) customers

i'm sure there are hosting plans cheaper than what we use right now with hostway, but everything is working great now, and i don't want to screw anything up transferring stuff :)

Are you looking at hosting for professional purposes(business), or just someplace online to store your stuff?

I don't do anything professional, I pay for hosting, and run gallery2 as my software. The setup of the software isn't any big deal to me, but it might be for you. Some places offer it(gallery) as a pre-configured package so you don't have to do the setup yourself.

Personally I'm on 1and1.com but I'd suggest you look into bluehost.com, they've got a competitive rate and also have a one-click install for gallery I believe. That's for personal use, as I said before, you might want something more for a business setup.

I use 1&1 at work for our website. It is very reasonable and they have a few packages to choose from. They look to be the cheapest for domain registration and hosting that I have seen.

I have my own server setup. (Crux Linux with PHP and MySQL). Its just running off of a cable modem but it works well enough. I use dynamic DNS for the DNS stuff. The box is an old IBM pizzabox. (x330 I think). My friend and I used to run the site off of a P2 400.

Domain registration is the only expense I have. (90 or so dollars for 5 years).

My gallery is just dAlbum right now but I may change it or create a separate gallery for my more "artful" images and use the old one for the snap shot types of pictures.

I have a website that I currently getting up and running (not photography related). I pay $3.95 per month Canadian for the web hosting and use open source web design on my page, this is basically free web page designs. So you can really do it on the cheap if you want. I knew nothing about doing this when I started and it took me a few hours to actually get it all up on the net.

my site (under construction): www.bicyclesmile.com
web host: www.diywebhosting.ca
open source: www.oswd.org

Indeed! Your site looks better than that of many professional photographers. I did a doubletake when I read that it was a couple of kids.

Maybe your company does that, but it's not true that it can't be blocked.

I have an upgraded cablemodem and a dedicated UNIX server (I'm a computer geek who does web programming for a living), so I host everything myself. My domains cost me upkeep every year, but between my wife's site, mine, and our family site I save a lot of money on hosting.

Our two individual sites are both run using Drupal, but out family site I just hand coded.
