Ok, so maybe i am making a big deal out of this, for me today was a turning point.

I decided to take the camera out and go for a drive and see what i could capture.

I ended up taking a trip along th South Wales coast to a very well known surfers haunt called ' Rest Bay' in Porthcawl.

Anyways as i was walking along i spotted a guy with a metal detector, some young kid with a 'Stunt Kite' and some interesting person hopping the rocks on a Mountain Bike.

After a few mins of taking pics from a distance, i decided that in order to get up close i was going to have to ask this guy if he minded me taking a few shots. I was kicking myself really, because the only lens i took out with me was a 70 - 300mm and i really needed something a little faster, but nevermind.

I approached said person and asked politely if he minded me popping a few shots off while he trained. He was quick to oblige.

After about 10 mins of admiring this sub-human rock hopper he took a few moments to catch his breath so i took the chance to express my thanks.

It turns out he is none other than 18yr old 'Ben Savage' the current #1 World BIU Trails Champion.

I have nothing but good things to say about Ben, not only did he represent his sponsors professionally, but he is one hell of a nice guy. He turns out he now lives locally due to the training that surrounds the locality.

There is no doubt that after this encounter and learning so much about a person that i have no worries about approaching people.

I am currently processing the images out and will upload a few (he gave me permission), but in the meantime i will leave you with this one.

No shame, Alexuk, you did what scares many people off, you spoke to a person!! You got a good response and some cool shots. Trouble is you live in a rather photographic area, I am surprised there are not more coast shots with sunsets. Go for it, take a load more and make me really jealous!

You got some cracking shots there, what a stroke of luck that you decided to go for a drive at that time!! It's a great feeling when you achieve something that you have wanted to do, such as approaching people to take their pictures, and getting such a positive response....nice one!!

Paul, why not offer Ben some of your photos?? It creates a lovely warm feeling for both of you :) Plus, he may suggest more shooting chances for you.

There is only one problem with getting sunset pictures in Wales......you need the sun.

That is great Paul!!! Good for you that you took the big step to ask him to photograph him. I hate it myself, so I really admire you for that!!

Love the pics, number one is my fave.

And indeed, offer him your photos if you know how to contact him. You never know what it might bring!

Come on, Paul, you have some stunning coast in South Wales! You are frightened of the dark! There is a world out there waiting for you to discover it! :)) Sounds like a commercial!

Congrats!!! Those are fantastic photos ... you absolutely give me hope that I'll one day over come my shyness in asking people to photograph them ... right now, you're my hero!!

I absolutely agree that you should offer him some of your photos ... might open the door for other opportunities in the future ...

Don't blame you! It is a harsher environment up there where you are. Down south, even in Wales, it is a lot softer :))

This is another shot from my little driving trip. I say driving trip, it was 10 mins away from my home.

Good job, Axle! You conquered your discomfort about talking to people, and even met someone for whom you have great admiration. That's a success story if I ever saw one. :)

Shots look great as well. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations! You did what many people are afraid to do! (including myself). Good for you. Now that you've opened that door, you will do it all the time. Great shots as well. Number 2 is my fave. :)
