Hi all. I am new to this site and I have actually found it quite difficult to enter into any challenges yet! I do not want to enter just for the sake of entering and seeing the great talent on this site I have to make sure I have a great photo to enter!

But now my problem is that if I just wait and wait and wait then I might be missing out on an entire learning experience and hopefully comments and critiques on my photos.

So what should I do? Do I just enter and let it blow out completely or do I wait?

Shoot and shoot and shoot for every challenge and when you like your shots, enter them. Don't worry about how they will score, shooting and getting feedback is a great way to improve your skills. :)

If you want to learn -- enter often & get beat up on bad ones & praise for good ones ;)

I'm still in the 'getting beat up' phase! One of these day's I'm hoping to move into the 'praise' realm!! Good luck and keep shooting ... always challenge yourself to do better ...

After waiting nearly two years to post my first entry, I would advise you not to wait. The experince you gain from trying outweighs any threat to your ego.

Go for it! I am not exactly setting the world on fire with my scores by I have learned TONS from taking shots within challenge parameters, and from looking at, voting and commenting on other people's images. Just watch out for the infamous Update Button Addiction once you start entering ;-)

You mean you have the first half of that down right!

I'm actually learning a LOT because I am shooting "just" for the challenges in many cases.

It's forcing me out of my box, trying new things, learning my equipment and environment, and a lot more.

Yeah - I get beat on for the bad ones. Most of the time I agree with the beatings too ! Praise - I just glow from it. But I learn more from the beatings (don't get me wrong - I love the praise ;) )

I learned a lot in the few I entered. They weren't the best, but the great people on this site helped me make some better with their advice after the challenge. Sometimes it takes a fresh eye to look at your picture to help fix or just to say its perfect as it is.

I pretty much enter 'em all and devil take the hindmost. I enter a lot of completely hopeless images, just to play the game, and every now and then I get on a roll. You can't score if you don't shoot, and I don;'t much care if people see how ragged my clothes usually are :-)

Thanks everyone for your advice. I htink I will just get out there and start taking a few risks on entering! Wish me luck for this week. Hopefully will be my first entry!

That's the spirit! Good luck to you. Keep in mind though, that if you ribbon on your first entry, you also get beat up. (I'm in charge of the committee that sees to it) :P

I'll have to agree with this and what's been said before also... you learn from your mistakes, not from what you've done well. You won't learn anything from people just going "yeah that's great!" "yeah that's awesome!".... you'll learn from people who take the time to analyse and critique your composition, lighting, idea behind the shoot and so on...

I'm just thinking of my rose entry for the RedIII challenge... I knew it wasn't a winner (and I know my entry for crossdressing is not a winner either!) but the important part is to be out there shooting and experimenting - and out here also in the forum in the community!!

Hey Philippe - a 6.15 and 91 percentile is pretty ding dang good! You may have done even better if there weren't so many roses in the challenge. Well done!

I would say that if your cumulative score means alot to you, you will only make yourself crazy by entering just to enter. I know of what I speak. My cumulative score is only 5.1, which was brought down considerably by my earlier entries, which got many 3's. If you want to learn, and not worry about scores at all, then enter as many as you can to learn what you can. For me, I need to take a break. What I do, however, is shoot for the challenge anyway, but not enter. I find I can learn alot from that experience by comparing the entries to my shot that I was going to enter. My last shot for circles I deleted at the very last moment because it seemed to not have any area in sharp focus. I am glad I did because after looking at the shots that were entered, I would have ended up with another sub 5.
When you do decide to enter, it helps alot to have at least one other set of eyes to bat it off of. I have at times called upon the dp folks to look at an entry to give me feedback. I only choose one, however, and I always email them before sending anything, like if they could help me shake down problems with my processing, etc. Not one person has said no yet.

Hehe thanks... the other pics I had was some crazy creative shot with mannequins and a pair of red high heel shoes... figured now one would get that so went with the rose. Maybe I was wrong. Anyhow, like I said it's a learning process... learning about photography but not only that learning about what people respond well to on this particular forum as well...
