My entry got pounded, falling below 5.0xxx at one point, and I'm wondering why. Based on how voting was going along with how many challenge submissions weren't really low key, I figured maybe it was the result of ambiguity around the theme. Seems to me it meets the definition of "low key" ... but maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe it's technically weak or simply uninteresting?

I actually dont mind it at all. I prolly would of given it a 6 or 7. It meets the challenge, just not sure if it really interesting. Hope that helps

I liked it and gave it a 7 so I don't know why...

I quite liked that one and scored it well - I thought it looked like something in one of those brochures you pick up at the dealer that you take home and subsequently drool over.

I liked it too.
Mine also got pounded...

Any real feedback?

this is probably why it scored lower than you'd have liked, actually... it would look perfect in the brochure for the car, but kinda looks out of place by itself...

hope this come across how i mean it... it's a very good shot of a slightly dull subject...

For me it was basically just the subject. I gave it a 5 because it was technically done correctly (it was in deed a low key shot), but the subject wasn't incredibly interesting.

for me whilst its definatly low light the angle of the light makes it a bit boring. Perhaps if you had used a small torch from beside the camera it might have helped. It is a nice photo but there isn't much to hold much intrest imo, I didn't vote but I would have said a 5 for me, which doesnt mean BAD.

I got my worst score ever on my image, and funny thing is, I actually quite liked it. I would sure appreciate feedback as I didn't get any during the challenge. I leave my score off and was actually quite shocked when I looked to see how it did - 31 three and below???

The consensus of my commenters is "not low key". In the interest of continuing the discussion, is this low key, and if not, why not? What is it?

The OP's shot, to me, is very good low key. I just wonder if "low key" means you MUST have a dark background to some. Then again, the Blue went to a shot that isn't predominantly black, and in my non-expert opinion, a very good low key presentation. I'm so confused! :-)

Mine:

(I will concede that it's probably boring.)

Actually, I liked the composition. I think this one borders on the edge of low key. I brought the image up in Photoshop. If you look at the histogram you'll see it is pretty flat across the board witha spike at the dark end and a fade off on the light end. IMO to be truly low key, you need most of your data on the left half of the histogram.

OK, I'll throw mine out there. I was truly excited about this one. Very few comments, and a lot of 4 votes.

So tell me why this image sucks!

Not Low Key enough? Tired of seeing my wife as a subject? The button on the sleeve?

Go ahead, I can take it!! ;-)

I liked it but gave it a 6, found the bent elbow strange and the fact she's to far to the right, would have liked it better if there was more negative space in front.
The score you got is not bad at all compared to mine!

Wonder if I misunderstood the concept completely? FWIW, didn't alter the image much as it was shot between rocks and the flower was reaching out to the sunlight.

Did I?

FWIW, I gave you a 7 on this shot ... I thought it was very well done and fit the challenge ...

I got pounded worse than most here ;)

So why does my image suck?

My thoughts: I think people thought it wasn't low-key (though the histogram pretty much says otherwise, if that's your guide, and I think I relied on it too much). It could be that the black is not altogether in one place (it's kind of hidden in the windows), and I'm thinking that in the end the toning made it look lighter than it should have looked. I'd love some comments, either here or on the image page. I'll take them in stride . . .

I'm off to do the same for the others who've posted in this thread.

Best,

Rob

I would also like some feedback on why mine did poorly.
