I received two comments on my book title entry suggesting that the photo would have been better in color due to the fact that the iquanas where blending in with the rock. Ironically, the reason I made the switch was to pull the iquanas out of the rock. I was thinking that the commenters may have thought that they where Green Iquanas and not Marine Iquanas, and hence the comment. Marine Iquanas are nicely camouflaged with the color of the rocks they inhabit.

Can someone look at the two photos (original and submitted) and offer an opinion as to whether I made the right choice?

Oh, and while I'm at it. Four 1's!!!! Grrrr!!!! lol

I like the one you posted. In fact I gave it a nine.

I thought the colour treatment gave it a vintage feel and the contrast was fine.

The colour one is my favourite.

But I will state again that you suck Trinch as you caught me fully with this one thinking it was for real *laugh*

I like the color one better, but it may be mostly because I feel the B&W is less clear, and the shadows darker with less detail. Also, the water colors are very nice in the color one. You still get a nice monotone effect showing how the iguanas match the rocks (which you don't see as well in the B&W.)

I think perhaps if you try a different re-toning technique you will get a better b&w. There lots of good techniques (some of which would not have been legal for DPC).

I just looked; this time I didn't get any ones, but I did get some twos and a bunch of threes that I feel were undeserved. Your photo also didn't deserve these low scores. I am for anonymous voting, but I am beginning to think the 1's and 2's ought to be "opened" at the end of each challenge to see if there's a pattern and people are voting down. Or maybe the system could just monitor that better. Those can drag down your score quick. I really strongly felt my Infinity entry didn't deserve two 1s!

Never mind my previous message, I'm goofy.

The B&W version seems a tad bit oversharpened, while the color version doesn't. Eh maybe it's just my monitor. :)

I gave it a 9 as well. Reason? It fit extremely well with both the title and the challenge. I liked the color choice, it fit with the way I think of the book, old. ^^;; The biggest problem was how grainy/blurry it was, which now I see was even a problem with the original.

I like the one from the challenge better than the full color, but if you were to re-tone and make it clearer, I would most likely prefer that result.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I could have gone either way between B&W and color. There's something for everyone. The area for improvement would have been in using contrast/brightness to bring out the shapes better and, if going with B&W, using a different color other than sepia.

As far as the ones, I am pretty sure Natator was responsible for one of them after I told him it the iguanas were stuffed and sitting behind glass in Washington DC's Natural History Museum. ;)

I like the B&W version because you cropped the reflection from the glass out. It's easier to imagine them in their natural habitat that way! I'm always dissapointed with the pictures I take of caged animals since they never look "real." I also think that since the iguanas don't have much color to begin with, the blue/green water distracts you from them in the color version. Good choice with B&W--I agree it gives it the vintage feel too.

I liked the B&W better. It had more definition of the iguanas and it fit the title quite nicely. It is a bit contrasty on my screen, though that could be a difference in white balance. I normally give the benefit of doubt in such cases.
