what the heck are these bugs crawling on the glass of my 55 gallon saltwater tank. we just placed 22lbs live rock into the tank about 3 weeks ago after curing it for almost a month in a quarentine "tank". these "bugs" showed up about 4 days ago. the white swirl things have been in the tank for about a month and a half but dont appear to be bothering anything at all(just curious as to what they are). my tank has one bi color chromis, two anemones, coral banded shrimp, and a feather duster. I just had 2 clownfish and a carpet anemone die about the same time these other things showed up. my other invertabraes look to be dying now. Ive searched the net with no luck as to what these things are. help!

The last pic, if the thing is stuck on the side, looks just like a barnicle. I once put some lake fish in my fresh aquarium and it filled up with apple snails which were eating almost everything in it. Bummer, and I hope that your critters pull thru this all right. I had one of the banded shrimp once, and they are cool looking. I named him "Popeye" because of the big forearm.

I found this for you, read some of the stories and some sound familiar to yours... hope this gets you off in the right direction.

The story below (From the link I posted earlier) seems like your situation...

Bugs... 3/28/03
Hi,
I have a fairly new, 4 month tank. Percula clowns have died in the tank about a month ago. I have waited for any parasites to clear, but still kept the snails and hermit crabs. I have just introduced 2 new, 3" percula clowns and some live rock, yesterday. Today, I see one of the clowns breathing very heavily and had white bubble like spots on his body, and even on his eye. I will give him a freshwater dip today and hope it helps.
The weirdest thing, though, is that I noticed that the sides of the glass had little specs of dust on them. They weren't there before, but I got a little curious so I took a magnifying glass and saw that they were not dust! There are hundreds, maybe thousands of these bugs attached to the inside of the tank! They look like roaches with short curled antennae on one side and long straight antennae on the other side. Are these parasites? How do I get rid of them, or are they normal? Is this what caused my first set of fish/anemone to die? or did it likely come yesterday from the live rock?
Please help.
Sammy

Found this article too... this has a positive outlook for your "bugs."
What they describe below seem like what you have pictured.

I had the normal Diatom problem, and now have nice green algae growing, hence the snails. My problem is this... Last night I was looking at the tank when I realized that the "bubbles" on the front glass were not in fact bubbles, but 1-2mm round "things" with what looks like 8 feather like legs that wave about a bit. I can't find any reference to these in any books. They seem to have appeared over night and are concentrated in the heavier flow. The fish are "possibly" taking the odd one or two, but I don't know if I should be worried or not!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks...this most likely explains the white swirly things that are all over the tank glass...doing a search now for the other "bugs" that are about the size of a pin head...was a ton of fun photographing them too@

Micro-crustaceans? 6/2/04
there are a few hundred of these white curly things that
have just started to show up in my tank in the last week.
i am sending a few pictures but they are too small to get
good detail of what they look like. the best that i can
explain them is about the size of the tip of a ball point
pen, curly and a lot of them.

ok...i was pretty sure those things wernt harmfull to the tank...off to search soem more for the scary bugs

Part of the reason for using 'live rock' is to inject at one time a large quantity of organisms into the tank. The stability of a reef tank in a large part depends on a wide variaty of organisms. I wouldn't worry about finding things in limited quantity. If you find more and more of a certain thing though that may be a problem...
