I spent most of today messing around with all the cameras at the store. I took a look at some of the photos provided by the shop for each camera (Not that I could see much of a difference between shots). I liked the D200 but it was out of my price range.

So, as long as my wife says OK, I'll be picking up a D80. My question is, would I be better just buying the body and then spending 400 dollars on another lense (By another maker, or even a better lense by NIKON) or is it normal for most people to be happy with the lenses offered with the camera?

Edit- As a side note, I do have a Fujifilm S9500. I was thinking of selling it to make the transition easier. The shop I went to said that so long as it was in mint condition, I could get 200 USD for it. I paid 600. And it is in MINT condition WITH box and everything. Would most suggest just holding onto it, or throwing it on Yahoo Auction (No ebay in Japan)? And what price would seem 'fair'?

If this helps, I had a d50 with the 18-70 lens that is the 'kit' for the d80 and thought it was a great lens (Ibought that lens with my d50 as I didn't want the kit 18-55 that came with the d50).
Sold my d50 a little while ago and bought a d80 with the Nikon 18-135. I personaly have found this lens to be great.
So in my experience both the Nikon 18-70 and 18-135 have given me no reason to complain.

:o)

It depends on what you want to do with the "kit lens." If you are just starting to build up your camera and lens cache, the stock lens will be good for most general photography, IMO.

My D70 kit came with a Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens. It's a good enough lens, but I have been a little dissapointed with the "f-stop speed." This is overcome with a faster ISO, but that creates grain sometimes. If I had the money to do it, I'd buy the camera body, and invest in a faster lens. But that's just me.

stay away from the 18-55mm lens ... it's a plastic piece of crap. don't get me wrong, some people like it, and it's not bad for $100. but you can do better for your base lens.

the 18-70mm is a very good lens, especially for its price. this is the lens i use!!

the new 18-200mm VR lens has got great reviews and there aren't many people who say anything bad about it. the VR gives you the advantage of 2 or 3 aperture stops in low light.

18-135mm is a good lens, but i'd take the 18-200mm VR first.

as for your fuji ... i dare say that you'd get a fair price for it as a trade on your nikon and gear. it'd also save you the hassle of selling it online and waiting for a buyer or hoping for a good price.

Depends on the type/style of photography you wanna do really

the 18-70 great bit of kit, still got mine from my old D70

18-200 VR some good reviews but I think its too much for 1 lens to do IMHO

Sigma make a great 18-50 f2.8

Tamron make a very good 28-75 f.8

so many lenses so little time

Enjoy your new D80... good choice.. get a spare battery and/or battery grip too the high power display eats batteries for breakfast.. get a couple of 2GB cards too.

Soon. I haven't been able to shoot anything that I would consider DPC worthy.

The lense kit that it would come with is either 18-70mm or for 100 USD more I can get the 18-135mm.

Be aware that nikon do some quite cheap lenses, when I bought my D70, it came with a nikon 28 to 70, or 80. I think it had the letter g at the end of the model no, and I was not to happy with it, however I got them to change it for the ed model, which is miles better, imo.
