I'm thinking of getting my own domain for my photos. For now, this is a vanity thing, so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. I may want to sell my photos one day, and it would be nice if I didn't have to switch hosts to do that. I'm running a Mac, so anywhere with Windows only management tools won't work for me.

My current site is just the 20 MB of free space that I get for owning a Mac, but it has the advantage of being able to generate a new album by uploading the photos and clicking a button. That's nice when I'm in a hurry, but I don't mind writing some code, although I don't foresee wanting to do something like write my own shopping cart. (I write C++ code for a living, but I have some experience with HTML, CSS, ASP, and JavaScript.)

What is/are...

recommendations for a good place to register my domain?
recommendations for a good place to host my domain?
a reasonable price per month?
a reasonable amount of storage space and bandwidth per month?
things to look for in a host?
things to avoid in a host?
anything else I should know?

GoDaddy.com$8.95 a year domain registration.
Vervehosting.com for webhosting from $5 a month up but with lots of extras, great control panel and awesome customer service. Vervehosting also offers domain registration for $15 a year.
$5 for 10mb or $10 a month for 100mb of space I find reasonable.
Amount of space really depends on how much you plan to keep online at once.
Customer service, not a reseller, and a good control panel I find valuable in a host.
One of the hosts I used in the past had a very limited online control panel, and I had to phone in some changes for them to setup for me. I was not fond of doing this, or sitting on hold. I prefer e-mail support as long as it is quick and I have found it usually within mere minutes at Vervehosting.com - which is why all of my accounts are there now.
I found Vervehosting by reading actual user opinions at Epinions.com, and there are other places out there with personal reviews.

p.s. I have no monetary interest in Vervehosting. I have just tried several hosts over the years, and I am a big believer in word-of-mouth.

I have two low cost suggestions if you want a place to post photos for people to view by invitation only, as opposed to surfing the web and finding your stuff.

MyFamily.com gives you 5mb for free, I think 100mb for $20/year, and more for a nominal fee. You have to invite folks in (they need a password), but it's all automated and has lots of useful features, like automatic email notifications of new content. I mainly keep LoRes versions of my pictures there for on-screen viewing.

For HiRes (300 ppi at print size) images, I keep them at Ofoto and Shutterfly. Again, you have to issue invitations to view your photos (on an album by album basis) but that privacy is generally a good thing (in my view), the storage is free, and the prints look great (Ofoto uses Kodak paper, Shutterfly uses Fuji).

Neither one gives you any real customization, but I'd rather have people be seeing my photos than constantly tweaking the HTML to allow them to do so.

Thanks, parlori. I didn't realize that Epinions rated services as well as products. I checked out the places you mentioned, and they seem pretty reasonable.

GeneralE, I have heard good things about both Shutterfly and Ofoto prints. Do they do any digital print sizes (like 6 X 8) or does everything have to be cropped to standard film sizes?

Ofoto and Shutterfly both print to standard paper sizes:
4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 16x20, 20x30. I've asked about 11x14, but haven't heard anything.

What I do is crop my final image somewhat smaller than the next-largest paper, and then use Photoshop to increase the canvas to the paper size. You can then trim your print down, although what I usually do is apply a color or texture border when increasing the canvas size, and often a caption and other information as well, so that tho photo is "pre-matted" for framing in a cheap frame or album.

If you send me a valid email address, I have a folder of about 50 images at Ofoto I can send you a link for, which will show you examples of what I mean.

If you're into making prints for relatives, you can maintain a shipping address book at either site -- they will drop-ship the photos wherever...

EZPrints.com does all those sizes, and a few more I believe, including the 11x14.
I just got a couple 8x12's back from them, one in glossy and one in matte and they turned out wonderful!

You can also leave your images on for a period of time and allow others to view them.

You are very welcome.

My problem is that I don't want to crop my photos. I really like the 4:3 aspect ratio and most of my photos are shot to take advantage of that ratio. It looks like EZPrints does 8 x 12 and some larger digital sizes, but nothing smaller. That actually works for me, since I can print up to 12 inches at home, although I have to trim them. I keep waiting for one of the paper makers to wake up and realize that many printers now have borderless printing, but there is no digital-sized paper! My printer can't do borderless, but it would be nice to have an even border around the whole photo instead of having one pair of sides larger than the other.
