I have not been pleased with the autofocus on my Nikon D50, and have assumed it was due to camera movement. I recently purchased a tripod and took the following shots using the tripod. I was using the 18-200 mm lens.
The photos were shot in RAW and the only processing I did was to convert the photos to jpg.
Is this softness normal?

I have also placed them in my DP Challenge portfolio under Tripod Test folder

I have had the same issues, but I kept thinking it was the user and not the camera as I am new to SLRs. When I first got my camera it seemed that all my shots were very crisp and I was thrilled. But lately a lot of the comments I get in my challenges are "It would be great if the shot was a little sharper." Which I totally agree with. Like you I have started using a tripod with most shots with not much improvement.
The only thing I am doing different now then when I first got the camera is shooting everything in RAW rather then JPG Fine. I have not played around and gone back and forth seeing if that is the issue because I love being able to edit my pics in RAW format. So I am unclear where to go from here myself. |

yes, it's pretty normal. you have to do some sharpening during post-processing with most SLR photos.
there are a number of threads around here about this issue. i'll try to dig some up. |
