Hi,

Absolute newbie to the dpchallenge boards here. I've read through the rules so I hope I'm posting this in the correct place because I really need help with this. 0:)

I've been thinking about attempting stock photography, but I have no idea if I'm good enough. Sometimes I'll see photos for sale on stock photog agencies that are far better than I could ever do. And then on the same site I'll see photos that I think aren't as good as ones I've taken.

I really need someone to look at my work and tell me if it'd be worth my going through the time and effort of submitting to an agency such as alamay or if my work is not good enough (or isn't the right type of photography) and I should save my time and effort. I just need someone's honest opinion. (You can be brutal. I can take it).

I keep a small percentage of my work on my photobucket album. If someone could browse over my stuff, I'd be grateful:

//photobucket.com/albums/y222/tesan

(A broadband connection is suggested. Dial-up might be too slow to view it. Also, hit the "View All" option on the right-hand side of the page. That's quicker than scrolling through the pages individually.)

If you don't want to waste DPC's bandwidth talking about the (un)worthiness of my pix, please email me at tesafreelance at gmail.com with your comments.

You needn't spend any great amount of time browsing through, if you don't want. A quick skim would probably be all that's needed. I don't want to waste anyone's time, but I do appreciate whatever amount of time you'd take to do this for me. Thanks very much!

I'll have a look for for.

Here is my first tip, quit being so hard on yourself. Learn to believe in your ability.

Edit:

Some great shots in your portfolio there. I'd say go for it. Don't think you'd be wasting your time at all.

Jan.

I think you have some very good images there ... I just have a HUGE problem with being told "CONGRATULATIONS ... YOU ARE THE 999,999th visitor here!! ... Click here to collect your prize !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... EVERY time I visit!

... and like that ... bleh!

Huh??

That's odd. I've never seen that ad on photobucket. In fact, I think they have pretty well-designed ads for a commercial server. But then, I don't really look at the ads on webpages much anyway. (And having a Mac, some adds don't show up at all. :>)

Thanks for taking the time to view the pix and for your input. :)

Thanks very much for your input, Jan! I don't doubt my ability photographically as much as I doubt my ability to tell what others think are good. Because, in the end, it doesn't matter what I think if no one else thinks they're good, especially when it concerns their marketability.

I won't pretend to know what people want in stock photography but I did have a look at your site. You have some really nice photos on there that I would think would do well on stock sites.

Best of luck to ya.

edit to add...I thought some of these places looked familiar...my family and I LOVE Gatlinburg (even got married there...yeah like I'm the first huh lol).

You've got some pretty cool images. The rocker one on the first page jumped right out at me.

As long as you keep your lenses clean and don't have dust specs on your sensor.. you'll be set.

Just make sure you follow the submission directions to the letter. Don't wanna have anything rejected for something silly on your part.

On a quick look, I see you have some gems in there.
You will need to have model releases for anything with recognizable people in it.
Several of your images need some post work to bump colors and contrast.
with a little bit of work, quite a few images there are worthy of a stock library.
The christmas tree 'sketch' was interesting image for me.
The thumb didn't do that one justice at all. I also like the guy on the electric scooter thing. That would make a good seller imo.
I noticed a few 'blurry' shots that even though it may have been intentional, wouldn't be well recieved.

All in all, pick your best 10 and send em in and see.
Whats the worst that can happen? Seriously, you shouldn't have any problem.

Although I think you don't have a typical stock portfolio, it's always difficult to predict what will sell and what won't.

So like others suggested, just take the plunge and see where it leads you.

You'll probably will find some suggestion in my article about microstocks.

Thanks! And thanks for taking the time to look them over. :)

hehe :) It always amazes me that no matter where I go, even in Europe, people know about and love Gatlinburg. :)

(If you got married at Victorian Gardens Wedding Chapel between the years 1997 and 2003, odds are that I videotaped your wedding.) :)

I like trying to make photos look like impressionistic art just using the camera, without photoshoping. I realize most of my "photo sketches" aren't stock material. Probably aren't aren't worth anything to anyone but me. :)

I don't like shooting people, if for no other reason than I hate dealing with release forms. At least, this guy is a friend so I wouldn't have trouble getting a release from him. I know stocks love pix of people, but they're not my cup of tea.

Yeah, some are experiments and others have too much noise because they were shot with my friends' crappy, low-pixel point-and-shoots. I only include them there because I can print them for the magnets I sell.

I guess I'll give it a try. The worse they can say is no. Thanks very much for your input and time! :)

I noticed right after I uploaded the group of pictures that included the rockers that the lens or sensor has some dirt on it. I'll have to touch those up (and, of course, clean the lens or sensor).

Thanks very much for your suggestions, rabi! :)
