There has been a heated debate at shutterstock about "stealing" keywords. Their forums are quite hostile, so sticking your head in there could get it bit off (ok, only a harsh flaming)...

How do you feel about copying keywords for stock images?

why would it matter?

I don't see the problem. Stealing keywords? huh?

I think it's SOP to look at other images and see what keywords they are using.

I think the problem is that people are taking entire sets of keywords without regard to the content of their own images. Since most photos are not exactly alike, neither should the keywords.

I remember 'stealing' keywords from one of my own images which was similar. I soon discovered there were keywords that shouldn't have been there: "Stormy" as a keyword for an image with a clear blue sky. My bad.

The agencies are legitimately concerned about inappropriate and useless images showing up in customer searches.

If the keywords relate to the photo then why should it matter?
I share my keywords whenever possible. Seriously, If its a blue flower, I should be able to keyword it blue flower even though someone else has one too. I research from many sites other image keywords for identification, or Genus names. Sometimes I search for a keyword I want to use and see if it brings up similars. I also prentend I'm the researcher and want to see whats best in that subject. I especially like the sites that show number of downloads. I would like to contact the image owner and suggest keywords they may have missed but thats just me.

I always look at 5 to 10 good selling similar images and 'copy' the keywords which I think are related to my image (serie).

Just see it as bench marking :)

I think the lazy people who go and copy/paste keywords from one image directly to theirs without really reviewing what they're putting down need the swift kick..

But in terms of reviewing other images to get ideas for your own keywords, well.. it's silly not to. A buyer can't find your image if you don't have your keywords up to par. As long as the keywords are accurate, then well.. it really shouldn't come as a surprise that two very similar images are going to have two very similar sets of keywords.

What it really boils down to is that some sites need to crack down more on the keyword spamming and inaccurate keywording. If I search for 'dog', I really don't want to see a shot of a business deal or a flower or some scenic shot.
