The above link is a screenshot of what I have in mind for a photo-gallery that I will host on a server. The page, as you can see, is not very complicated; but would still require some scripting & coding. I'm seeking some creative input as well as recommendations for web designers who could do this. If you are interested in helping out a fellow DPCer, please let me know:

-The feasibility of what i have in mind

-Cool ideas you might have that could improve it

-Any skilled web designers who could accomodate my newbie needs and demands. Compensation provided.

What's the purpose of your website? To sell images? To show your family life? As entertainment? With an idea of what you are trying to accomplish, members could probably give better advice.

Looks great! Personally, I don't think the idea of allowing visitors to right click and save my pictures is a good idea, but then, I have delusions of adequacy and worry about somebody wanting to steal my shots for their own profit. :)

I've seen a flash site that has some of the features you seem to be going for.

Hope this helps, and good luck! keep us posted when you get it up and running.

The purpose is to display, in the simplest and most pleasing way possible, all the photos I have taken.

Would you be wanting this in HTML or Flash?

To update the site would you be able yourself to go into the code and add new images, or would you want the site dynamic so you could update it with, say, a web form that would upload/format for you?

Not sure how you will get the horizantal scroll bar as you've got it working (unless you go for Flash). I struggled to get mine like that.

Here is a link to my site in PHP, HTML, CSS & JavaScript -> here

Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few of the questions:

-The site will be non-Flash because Flash tends to be laggier. In addition, the ability for visitors to right click any image and save is important.

-For me to upload pictures for myself, I have no trouble with following the code for an existing gallery and copying/pasting new links to make a new gallery.

-The ideal working example of what I have in mind is the dpreview samples gallery.

-Paul's gallery is also excellent; although for mine I do want a horizontal scroll bar for quick browsing.

You might consider installing a software/script that has templates to get you started. QDig, for example, has a template similar to what you're looking for. JAlbum has a ton of templates.

Printscreen. It's a function built into Windows and will allow a capture of anything on the screen, even a flash site. Disabling right-click disables other functions, and will keep only the old folks from saving an image (young folks know these tricks, and are the ones most likely to steal the images anyway)

I think it would be easier to just get a smugmug gallery add the flash slideshow and be done with it.

$60/year and unlimited storage?

Thanks mk I'll look into it; but my spoiled self will probably not settle for anything other than what I initially wanted :D

"Flash tends to be laggier."

It depends on how it's built. I don't have ANY problems with the speed of the Flash apps that I've built. To allow easy downloads, you could put a button that says "Download Here" and brings up the URL of the image in a new window where they can right click. Also, depending on their browser settings, it may start downloading right away as soon as they hit the link. It's also possible in Flash to make it super-easy for you add new pictures, simply by uploading an XML file (XML is a LOT, LOT easier to use than it sounds ;)
