I'd like to propose that all DPCers using the Canon Poweshot G3 discuss their thoughts, feelings and technical advice on using this camera.

I recently purchased my G3 and it is my first digital camera - my first real camera, ever. I know I would appreciate what other users of this camera have to say about it, as I'm sure others would as well, be they perspective buyers, new users, or long time owners who have perhaps overlooked an aspect of the G3 and would like to learn more about it.

I'm thinking about all kinds of things from light metering to battery life, thoughts on the swing out lcd to the interchangeable lense options. What does this camera have that makes it so great? What does it have that could be improved upon to make it better? What is it missing altogether?

I'm interested to see what the G3 owners here have to say!

Great idea!

I have a real love/hate relationship with my G3.

It's great for macro and mid-range shots. I'm frustrated w/ the distance limitations.

I still don't have the add on macro and tele lenses but hope they will come my way this holiday season.

I'm still learning all the ins and outs of the different settings.
I've been experimenting lately with the DOF possibilities and using the AV and TV settings.

Battery life seems really good, I've not run one down in extended shooting. I do have an extra though just in case.

The swing out lcd screen seems very vunerable to me, and I have trouble with seeing the exact focus, but that may just be me.

I think the dial thingy for changing settings and focusing is real problem. I find it rather akward and wish there was another way to focus the camera.

For the type of camera it is I like it a lot. As much as I would like to have a DSLR, this one is much more affordable and portable and within my budget at this time.

I like my G3 quite a bit. You just have to understand the limitations.

The telephoto extension makes quite a big difference and enables you to get in close and really decrease the DOF. I've used that feature successfully in a number of shots, most noteably:

Most of my shots these days are shot in manual mode and having the preview available before the shot is quite handy. You get an idea of what you're gonna get before you even press the shutter - the only problem is that with the longer exposures, it almost always lies.

My only real problem with it is that the LCD blanks when you press the shutter and there's only one real autofocus point. This makes it almost impossible to get really good action shots. Of course for that, there's always movie mode :)

I also shoot mostly in manual, but I've found the AV and TV options to be useful in some instances, especially very low light.

I've yet to get a decent action shot. Would love to hear if anyone else has managed this.

I do like the multiple shot option. I've used that successfully a couple of times. It has some real possibilities for interesting series shots and capturing those moments that you would miss shooting single.

It may be the best way to get action, now that I write this! hmm, I'll need to go experiment with that.

I shoot in P mode with other settings set (I use the C1 mode) for most of the photos I take. I also have C2 set for M mode with a lot else set that I use for astrophotography. here is the link for my settings: //www.sturm.org/G3Settings.htm

I have found, that if you know the limitations of the camera, you can push them and get great shots. I have some great astrophotography shots, especially of the latest eclipse //www.dpchallenge.com/profile.php in my portfolio.

I have had my G3 for almost a year, and it is a nice little camera. It is a more of a point and shoot, so it does have it's limitations. If you go look at my website, the pictures there were all taken with my G3, and they are pretty darn good. You just have to practice with it, and the use of the controls will become second nature. I find that the color green is often too green and needs to be toned down. I also have some gripes with the flash causing over exposed pics, but an external flash can help with that. I recently stepped up to a digital rebel, and I love it. Going from the G3 to the Rebel was very easy. I think the G3 is a good first digital camera to start with.

Have fun!!
