I have a newspaper assignment that I have to shoot tomorrow on short notice. Our paper is running a story on Global Warming in Sunday's paper and they want a photo. The writer cut a photo assignment for me to go out to one of the local parks and photograph some people enjoying the weather. The problem with that is that our high temp for tomorrow is only about 40 degrees and I won't find any people who look warm :)

I need to do some sort of photo illustration that can be used with a global warming story. I have a few ideas, but I'm looking for some extra ones...

Any thoughts?

Yeah we Aren't enjoying the stinking hot weather out here

To get the point across can you use historical images next to current ones? If so, it doesn't matter if the people in the current images don't look warm as long as the images from the past give the impression of freezing.

Send me a plane ticket... I am positive I could almost sweat in 40 degree weather. If memory serves me right, last Monday it was -36C here.

Good thing we're having global warming otherwise you'd be dang cold. ;o)

You're getting what we had in November while you guys were basking.

I think these are great, but good luck finding similar in N.C.

How about a bikini clad skateboarder... that certainly would give the impression of a warm environment.

Global warming, ya'll sure it's not a natural part of this earth cycles. On a week long trip through Cataract Canyon in southern Utah I saw many petrified palm trees and other rain forst type trees. So at one time it was green now it's desert. And how about the glaciers that cut the Rocky Mountain 15,000 years ago, humm global warming with the cavemen too. Oh heck, no rant here, so feed the homeless, stop disease, or spend billions on something that it is ..... well

Ya a Global Warming contest would be great, it could be fun.

Do you have any large industrial plants spewing pollution near you? Or traffic jams with large exhaust clouds? That type of air pollution is supposed to be a major factor in global warming.

Ideas R Us...

Stick an actual globe in an open oven and take a shot with the burners glowing red.

Alternate: hold a globe with oven mitts, showing steam rising off of it.

A take a shot of an obviously-disappointed skier in short sleeves on a grassy or sandy slope.

Show an obviously-sweaty Eskimo in Bermuda shorts, etc.

Make a "North Pole" or "Welcome to Greenland" sign and shoot it submerged in water.

Why do they have to look warm? Global warming causes irratic weather patterns including cool where you would expect warm.

Maybe a shot of someone sitting at the beach / park all wrapped up with a caption saying something like unseasonable weather.

Just a thought.

edit: I like scalvert's ideas. I just thought you were limited by your editior assignment to the park shot.

For a newspaper photo, the photo needs to be direct and to the point.

As are the headlines and the articles for that matter. At what point does the truth get relayed? Maybe this global warming thing would resonate with more people if something other than a "shock and awe" approach was used. Sorry just ranting, ignore me.

P.S. I like Shannon's ideas too.

I could forward a picture of a couple of feet of the white hot drought we are having in Colorado!

Or you could use one of Shannon's ideas.

This is not a journalistic article. It's editorial. One of our reporters went out and did a bunch of simple man-on-the-street interviews with local people asking them various questions about their opinions on global warming. I just need to provide something about 8" wide and 5.5" tall to fill the photo hole on the front page...

I think I have my ideas in order now and I'll shoot them tomorrow...

A young couple dressed lightly exchanging Valentine gifts.

Surely in said park there is at least one tree doing something, not at all normal for early February. Hell, we've got'em blooming in this neck of NC.

If any of the people in the "man on the street" interviews are anything like those found in Leno's skits, I wouldn't put too much faith in what they have to say...most are clueless. :)

You could take a different approach to the assignment...shoot a herd of cattle and then blame vegans/vegetarians for global warming...if we ate more meat, there'd be a lot less bovine flatulence which contributes mightily to global warming (at least that's what the "experts" say).

Take a picture showing extream cold. No joke.

A global ice age is the natural consequence of global warming.

Here is how it works. 70% of Earth's heat is distributed by a global ocean conveyor circulation system. For example, the North Atlantic conveyor takes heat from the Gulf stream northward to the east coast of the USA and ultimately to northern Europe.

The conveyor depends on a delicate balance of water temperature, salinity and pressure at various depths. The conveyor absolutely depends on ocean water that cools off in northern oceans being heavy enough to sink and continue the circulation.

Two important events occur during global warming. One, ice at the poles melt. Two, there is more rain because of increased evaporation.

These two events combine to lower ocean salinity to the point that it is no longer heavy enough to sink. When this happens the global conveyor shuts down. When the conveyor shuts down heat no longer is redistributed effectively from the equatorial areas.

Next, the poles get colder and ice caps refreeze quickly. Since ice is highly reflective the earth absorbs less heat and becomes colder. This spiraling effect can keep the Earth 'cold' for 1,000 years or more.

The Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute has been measuring ocean salinity in the North Atlantic and have confirmed that ocean salinity is dropping rapidly.

find a ball or something that looks like the earth. then light a zippo under it ( don't let it catch fire!) shoot it on a white background. I did one like that a while back and it got a descent responce.

Just shoot a shot of the sun. This is where 99.9% of our heat comes from. The rest of the heat is from the global warming B.S./methane from the scientist with politcal agendas and with out all the facts. :) Van

So can we see you wound up with?

And by the way, it was 29 here in Atlanta on Saturday. I can sympathize!...k

Global warming .... natural cycle ....

Amazing that 6000 years ago there were no glaciers in the northern hemisphere. Then we had global cooling ... (kinda like this winter) and glaciers formed in the northern hemisphere. Then now we're having global warming to melt them like the last several ice ages. Remember after Katrina we were warned by the scientists that last summer would be even more and more violent hurricanes .... none!

I kinda think that all the billions could better be used to improve efficiency of gas/oil burning equipment and then tackle world hunger and desease. Somehow that isn't as romantic. So global warming something that will happen way after we're all dead so no-one can say "I told ya so".

No rant just maybe another way to look at it. Maybe throw a handful of money in the air and take a picture of it. Or a picture of the homeless freezing under the freeway ;)

I didn't read through the threads so I apologize if this is a repeat. How about getting a night photo from a factory area where smoke/steam is coming out of the stacks. Set up a nice long exposure and the effect will look widespread.

Or, just pay someone to wear a t-shirt and shorts enjoying an ice cream cone on a park bench.
