My Nikon 80-200mm f2.8D AF will be in today. I now have an "overlap" in lens'. I have the 105mm f2.8 Nikon that I like for Macro use.
The 80-200 has, to my knowledge, a macro setting that gets you 1:7 ish...
I have a pk 13 tube that will raise that 1:7 considerably for my macro shots.
Other than the "smaller" size of the 105mm, is there any reason to keep the 105 in my bag?
If I sell it, I would use the money for a "wider" lens...which I don't currently have.

just a thought: you might get more traffic in your threads if you made the subjects a little more specific.
that being said, i think the prime macro lens is going to be way sharper than the zoom lens will be. you should do some tests with both and compare before you decide. |

I have used a 100mm macro lens and some of my other lenses claim to be 'macro' lenses.
Only you can answer how serious you like to do macro shots. I have a friend that loves them and to him a 'almost macro' lens is not worth a dime.
Here are a couple of Emmanuel's shots - you won't get these with a 70-200 'macro' lens

Kenskid you are slowing making me want to purchase the 80-200. However I just bought a new light kit a few weeks ago and my wife bought me 2 new lenses for xmas, Now she wont let me buy any new glass for awhile. So basically you are taunting me here. I will eventually add this lens along with a 85mm 1.4 to my collection. hopefully around mid year. I have to pay off the light kit first.
post your first thoughts on the lens when you finally get to use it.

I'll keep the 105mm.
That said...my 80-200 just came in. I have it in my hands !
I'm taking some indoor shots tonight. My daughter has the lead in a high school play. I'll post some Saturday. They wont be "fantastic" but they should give me and idea of the quality of my new toy.

| Keep the 105 micro nikkor. Head to head, it is sharper than you 80-200, adding an extension tube will make it worse. When it comes to macros, sharpness is very critical. |

Thanks...I've decided to keep it as long as I take macros! As my portfolio shows...they are my favorites.

Kids plays and school programs are the main thing I would be using this lens for. So I am definately interested in seeing the pics you take tonight. if you have a second after you upload can you PM me and let me know so I can check them out.

| I have to agree, the zoom at 1.7.1 Is not even close to the 1.1 lifesize macro of the prime, you would need a 1 tube just to get the zoom to 1.1 and the IQ would suffer not a little but very much! I think you are wish in keeping both.. |
