seems DPC could use a "get over yourselves" make-over,dont be afraid of new ideas and mabe let your hair down a lil, anyone agree?

i dont think the DPC crowd is all narrow-minded in-the-box thinkers, but i do agree with you that we should let our hair down sometimes
01/29/2007 10:23:47 PM · #3
Not totally... I agree to a point, but a lot of people that think they are "outside the box" are really trying to redefine the box.

Or they are trying to stick a square box in a round hole and force it in with a hammer (title). Won't work.

OR...There is no box ;-)

Edit: By the way "Outside the box" is one of the most abused phrases at DPC.

Seems like you've developed quite a few issues with DPC in your brief time here.

I agree with the thread title. I don't understand what else you've said. See you in Rant.

to tell you the truth, I totally agree. Lots of photos I've seen in some challenges that are mindblowlingly good have been kicked to the ground. People here really need to kind of open their mind. Photography is constantly changing and developing, it's only that narrow minded point of view that hinders it from becoming more creative and more groundbreaking.

welcome to DPC, Jonnie. Once you've been around you'll see that the bantering and bickering is all in good fun (usually) or for the sake of artistic/creative debate (usually) and normally ends well (usually). lol

Also, for every 1 person that gets creative and is truly outside the box, there is still 76,000 users that may not have made that same leap yet, so votes will not always reward the rebel.

Hang around for a while, shoot the type of work that makes you happy and read lots. there is much to learn here and plenty of people willing to teach.

Unfortunately, sometimes when people think they are just out of the box, they are actually in left field. j/k

It's all in interpretation and everyone has a different interpretation of what fits and what doesn't when it comes to a challenge. ;o)

I still say there is no box... :-)

But, if anyone truly believes that DPC hasn't evolved... check out the second ever challenge.

I could have so busted ass back then :-) The competition here is stiff... and if you are going to be outside the box, you better be on your A-game. But, competing with such talent helps you learn, because you are competing directly with challengers at every level. Thus, if you study what your competition did right, you can learn what made that photo so "hot".

Anyway, as far as the bickering goes in the forums, it's mostly harmless. There are a few butt holes (as there are in real life), but as a community DPC is tame compared to most online forums.

Ohhhhh. Popcorn? I'm in!

For what it's worth, my current challenge entry is a bit OOB itself, and doing quite well. (Compared to my previous scores, that is. :)

Also, I've been voting in the Nude challenge (who isn't?) and some have pushed the boundaries there as well. Here's hoping that they are rewarded for their creative and artistic skills! :)

And I need some creative and artistic skills. . . . Trade? :)

Jonnie - the popcorn reference means they think some serious debate may break out over this topic and they'd like to have a snack while they read along! *I should write a DPC nuances guide* :)

I've tried them. . . all they want to do is talk. :)

OK, enough with hijacking the thread! Off to bed with me!

forget about trying to change the way people see things because for the majority that just is not going to happen but what you will find here (sometimes hidden away in very dark corners) are plenty of talented artists who's work will suit your "tastes" no matter what they are. Unfortunately most of the time you will have to look beyond whats forced apon you (front page etc...) to find it but its here.

oh yeah and I think I kinda agree, but thats the nature of the beast and its not why I am here.

Wait a minute...there's a box?? That's been my problem. I haven't found the box yet. Or maybe I'm well inside of a HUGE box. I don't quite know...anyone wanna help me out?

I love creative thinking, but I find it doesn't really fit in here. I once ran my own photo challenge, very much similar to this one (except the winner chose the next theme) and I encouraged 'out of the box' thinking. However, the themes would be limited to a title, like "match", and not include a description. The photographer would then choose what they think 'match' means, be it the thing that starts fire or two objects that belong together, etc. By having a written description of the contest, a lot of the creativity in interpretation gets lost. Granted, our own 'match' theme specifically allowed 'out of the box' thinking, but most descriptions here don't seem to include that clause.

Well, that's my 2 cents anyway.

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be a riot if Langdon entered Table Shot II and ribboned again?

We're a nice enough crowd (usually), and new people with questions / comments never get strung up on a yard arm.... usually! lol
