Hi, I'm new to this photography and this site. I'd really appreciate some comments on an image I've uploaded to the B&W and portrait gallery. Apologies for the file name (CRW_0129.... not very descriptive)! Thanks :)

Dan

You can change the title by clicking My Portfolio, and then clicking the picture.

Thanks Coolhar!

did the image do anything for you?

I'ts a tight(ish) crop from a larger image. The gull took some coaxing to fly into position! I guess it's taught me that portrait shots in the great outdoors can be a little unpredictable, though pleasing!

I am not really experienced enough to give an expert critique. I can't see anything technically wrong with it except maybe just a little grainy toward the top. I like the composition. The gull is a plus. Might be a little more interesting if you could see eyes. On the whole a decent picture but not a wowser. I'd estimate that it would get between a 5 and a 6 in a challenge here.

I agree to coolhar. The eyes are so importante to people shots. And... you take a people shot because it apear to be you main subject. How can I say it? You gave a great space on image to it, may be effect of your crop. You set the focus to it. But the gull... Oh, the gull, changes everithing. Because of that, this is not more one people shot. In this context you are right hiding the eyes.
I found a great constrast between nature (represented by gull) and the cigar. One appeal to individual critique senses. It´s art. Know what impression you can cause, is the artist´s work.

I like this shot a lot! I don't think not seeing the eyes is a detracting to the overall effect, in fact I like this aspect of the shot! I also left comments on the shot itself.

Nice 'newbie' shot!

Thanks Marcos and Ron,

It means a lot to get some critique on my photo! I'm totally new to this website and serious-ish photography. Hopefully I'll be able to give something back to the forum and to the people who take the time to review images.

If you want to thank me, vote and comment!!! And I don't mean comment on shots that you think are good, comment on the ones that aren't so good, or THE ONES THAT ARE ALMOST GOOD!!! Help people get better!!!

One of those shots could be mine and I'll be very greatful for the help!

If this were in a challange and fit the challenge perfectly I would start at a 6. Then I would come back later and say this:

I like this overall shot, the use of negative space is well done. The sea gull in the upper left really adds to the shot, how nice of him to come by for you! ;) I like the black and white effect on the shot but the shadows on the person's face is a bit distracting, if I could see the eyes a little more I would like it better. The focus is a tad to soft for my taste but overall an great shot. Raising my original 6 to a 7.

You know its an interesting paradox, photography is just about as subjective as it gets, though an excellent photo is really not.

I have to completely disagree with the comment that eyes need to be good/great people shots. They of course have their place, in this case I think they would detract from the subjects attitude. Other than the technical, I think on eof the most important common threads in great people photography, is the subjects "Attitude" should be immediately felt.

Your shot to me (and I am not the measure of all these "exposed"), has good "attitude" perception. And again to me, technically things are pretty good here: you have good contrasts on the suject and less on the background (a good thing), depth on the subject is also good with only one exception I will call to later, you wouldn't want the gull or the railing to be as sharp or contrastee as the model and you don't, her highlights on the face are not burnt up - good, and the all black jacket/top is given depth by the wrap - very good. The only thing I could say and I am really getting to the nat's ass here, is that the depth of the hat may need just a couple of gamma shades; and I mean ever so subtle, comp is good - pleasing and drawing.

Of course the arts'ee side of most anything can run to the infinite it seems, good job with this one.

The trick in photography is actually not being at the right place at the right time (though it works nonetheless of course), its making the right place at the right time actually happen!

You have an eye!

I really like this shot. I think it would be weakened if the eyes were visible. It would detract from the mystery of the subject.

The attitude really makes this one interesting. The crop on the person is just where it should be, not to high and not to low. The minimal amount of elements within the frame adds the right amount of tension to the composition. It's easy for me to create a story to go with the picture and that is a big plus. The only things I don't like about it are: That spot in the sky that isn't the bird and also the shadow falls into her eye socket, creating an imperfection, imo, in what I feel should be a straight line between her hat and face. High fashion and high art. In other words, I like it.
