| nice to see the bird win. where's the creativity? and then many of the creative ones were not even motion panning. boo. |

Mine was creative...and was motion panning and wasn't good enough for top ten. This type of thing happens with every challenge...so forget it and get on with the next challenge.

Ha! Wait until the Wildlfe results! Luckily I didn't enter anything with feathers, and it's not doing to well. I guess that's what I get...
Edit: I just counted how many bird entries there were..124/218! That's
%57!

Top 10 has 3 birds, 3 autos, 2 amusement park rides, 1 airplane, and 1 bicycle. So what's the problem? At a quick glance, about half the entries used wheeled transportation of some sort, and a whole bunch of others used birds, so seeing half the top 40 using vehicles of one kind or another seems statistically about right...

Makes perfect sense to me: birds are by FAR the most accessible wildlife for most of us if we want to shoot in the natural habitat.

Birds and rodents... and a rat or squirrel isn't a particularly good subject for motion panning. Although a good shot of a squirrel jumping from one tree to another would have rocked.

Well if I had kids (three perhaps) and a trampoline I would have tried some panning with one of the kids going up while the other two became blurred and create some kind of abstract that way. Probably would have sucked though. Not that this was a creative idea as I got it from this favorite photo of mine and seeing librodo's kids jumping on the beach shot.

erm...isn't panning technically left to right, or right to left.....not up and down?
Even I voted high for some that were not technically panning... I'll take my 30th place for my first entry as a compliment.

I voted all of the entries in the Wildlife challenge; of the 15 or so I've currently rated 8, 9 or 10 ... only 4 have feathers. There were a lot of bird entries, being so accessible as mentioned, but there were also some great non-bird submissions IMO.

Left to right , up and down same technique, although it is a bit harder to motion pan vertically and get a crisp subject due to the fact that our bodies have a wider and smoother range of motion on the horizontal axis.

Going back to the original post ...
Vehicles have a nice feature for motion panning: they don't change shape over time. So you get much crisper subjects, assuming you get the panning right.
Having said that, I think some of the most beautiful results were shots like those from Bear_Music and Posthumous, with parts of the subject birds blurring.

| Interesting to note, that the photo that would be champ is languishing on the last page. If the photo was so good, wouldn't you do your utmost to ensure that it was verified? |

| This may be off subject, but I thought it was interesting. All three of the Motion Panning ribbon winners used a lens in the range of 24-70. There was a Sigma, Tamron, and Canon. All F/2.8 lenses. lol |

| Kinda strange how some pics, while good pics, but had no motion panning, ended up high in scoring. Seems like people sometimes overlook the fact that a picture DNMC and still score it high anyways. I always struggle with that myself, but in the end, I tend to score lower because it is simply not a part of the challenge.. |

I couldn't agree with you more Judi, Ive only been here for a few months but seems that every challenge spawns a sore looser picking on other photos or someone just whining in general...
Everyone has different tastes, views, eye sight, opinions... the votes have been cast and theres nothing you can do about it, time to suck it up and move on. Life is too short to dwell on such trivial things.
