If you visit my portfolio you will notice that I seem to favor the "Square Crop Format", against the portrait or landscape format.

I think the reasons to why I do this, is due to the fact that most of my images seem to suit this format.

I do know that when I look at nature, I can often see, exactly what I what, at the very beginning, re the final image result that I process.

I have a very graphic eye, which seems to override the more human visual eye, when taking photos.

Why not add one of your square crop image, to this thread, so that we can see what your square crop photos are like, and why you like them.

"Natures Mask" by sherpet Feel free to visit my portfolio to see some more square crop images.....

Definately my favorite image in my portfolio, at the moment. I played with all three formats, (Portrait & Landscape) but the "Square Crop" won out in the end, as it gave the image more impact.....

It would be nice if we could leave some comments of some of the other square crop images in this thread, to why you like them also.

Here is one of my recent favorite square crop image, that someone else has done, so adding it here as well.....

If you don't have a square crop image yourself, choose one from another portfolio, of someones elses square crop that you like, and say why you choose it.....

by eyewave

This is just "awesome", re impact, color, and composition.....

I'm a sucker for square crops myself, and to me this picture couldn't be cropped any other way.

I find myself looking for subjects that would fit a square crop all the time (Wish I could afford a digital Hasselblad)

I never really looked until you mentioned it, but apparently I don't tend to crop in a square. There are only 2 in my portfolio that are square crops, and one was for the Square Crop challenge.

Looking through my portfolio I realize how few square crop images I do. This first image is the only true square crop that I have entered. I dont think any other crop would have done this shot justice. The square crop allows for the largest view in voting and the centered subject just makes this one sing for me.

This is close to a square crop (off by 7 pixels I believe). This is a favorite of mine for obvious reasons - I might be a bit biased. ;)

Agreed... this one is perfect in a square!

The closest I have gotten to a square crop yet:

(off by exactly 7 pixels. :)

Why I don't do more? I really have no idea. This one was primarily because I liked the graduation of the sky, but I had to get rid of all the radio towers to the right. This was not even a challenge entry.

I don't crop square often... but for this one, it just worked. With half the frame filled with model and half filled with negative space, it made for an interesting composition (to me).

I like the frame on it too. (Gotta learn to do that, if only so that I can use it in a completely inappropriate manner for a challenge. :)

And, again. . . I like the creative use of the border on this one. (Sounding like a broken record yet?) This gives me so many ideas! (That can be overused and abused!)

I love the square crop. all but two of my top rated shots are square crops. that may not bode well for my match shot. It's not square. lol..oops!, this is my fav square crop not only because it's my dad but the extra pixels allow it to be a bit more "in your face" when veiwed.

Feel free to use and abuse... I used it this once and have yet to find another photo that I like that border on :-)

Please keep those "Square Cropped" images coming, either one of your own, or of someone elses that you love.

I giving out lots of comments today in this thread.....

Here is another one that I love, and would often be formated in the landscape crop, but it looks super in the "square crop" and even won a "BLUE" ribbon.....

the subject's so nearly square, the format seemed natural

I think it works. Not the best shot of that subject but the perfect subject for a Square Crop, IMO.

neither one of 'em wld suit any other crop, really

I chose a square crop for my entry in the patterns challenge because I thought a simple circle in a square would create a nice visual impact.
01/16/2007 07:38:04 PM · #19

I like this one because it crops in more and to me... focuses on his eyes. :)

And a good choice it was!

wings, tail, and cat ears make an "X" would not be as apparent in a rectangle crop

it fit better in a square than a rectangle for the compositional effect I wanted

My only ribbon to date. But I love this shot as it was a rush of inspiration that I have yet to experience again. It was the most gratifying feeling. You just know it when it's right.

I chose to use the square crop because it seemed to balance and frame the switch better - I also like the colors and the texture in this one.

Here is another recent ribbon winner, re the Square crop format, that I love.....
