Could anybody recommend a few good photography books? We don't have a good bookstore in our town, so I mostly buy online, but I really miss being able to pick up the book I'm interrested in and paging through it before I buy.

Often you really can't judge a book by its cover...

I'm only part-way into it, but so far "understanding expsoure" is pretty good.

Hi Martus,

What sort of Photography books are you after? Instructional books? or Pictorial books?

As for Instructional or How To books - I am at the beginning end of my journey - so I'm with Mist on Understanding exposure - and as for Photoshop I'm TRULY a novice so have Scott Kelby's The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers and just yesterday purchased Show Me Adobe Photoshop CS by Andy Anderson & Steven Johnson.

As a self taught photoshopper - I was REALLY needing direction in the basics of photoshop regarding options, shortcuts etc and this new book is terrific for my needs.

Hope you get some good answers - I'm keen to hear what others suggest.

Not sure I fully understand exactly what sort of books your after.
If you are referring to Photoshop type books then I would have to second the Scott Kelby choice. His book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers is great. I think he is up to his third edition (up to CS2)depending on your version of photoshop. He also does Podcasts for an American TV channel called Photo TV. You can download these.
I would also highly recommend a magazine called "Better Photoshop Techniques". It's an Australian production so I'm not sure if its available in South Africa. It only comes out 4 times a year and is twicw the price of the other magazines but excellent. Lots of reading and ideas.
If you are looking for Photo books - then Steve McCurry is my choice. Any of his picture books you will drowl over (for hours on end).

On Photography by Susan Sontag

I always recommend this one. It's not a technical book but it's pretty heavy food for thought.

I'm looking for instructional books, mostly on photography basics, photographic technique and digital editing. I am pretty new at this, and have a lot to learn.

I've never read it, but might wander into a bookshop to check it out!
