I like this in one of the reader's comments:

Ahh, that's familiar. But actually I feel that sometimes when I comment I do the same. That is point out technical stuff that I don't necessarily (SP!) mean are important for the image.
The point is you never know who took the image and what they really ment with it. For a beginner it might be worth mentioning that the subject could have been more to the side to apply to the rule of thirds etc. Even though artisticly rules are really only made to be broken.
I feel that you never really know What the photographer who put the image out for viewing/commenting is after. Just "this is wonderfull" comments, technical critisism that often has nothing to do with the actual value of the image as an art piece or just plain "like it /hate it". The only thing one is left to do is say what one thinks and feels.
It might be totaly useless to comment about not conforming to the rule of thirds etc. to a pro photographer but it might just be exactly what the commenter feels would have made the image even better.
With that said there are of course situations where people are just totally blind to the art in the photography and only think about technique and rules, whic really shouldn't be what it's all about.
