i got a surprise last night when i tried to enter both challenges for free members.

i already entered the b&w portrait challenge. but i came up with a last minute idea for the song title challenge ... but i can't enter both! :(

i'm rather surprised. i understand only being allowed to enter one photo PER challenge. but if there are two challenges, i figured i'd be able to enter both.

my new years resolution is to enter 1 or 2 challenges a month. i've been watching this site for a while and i'm going to try and participate more.

looks like it will only be one challenge a month! :(

anyways, i've withdrawn my b&w portrait entry and gone with the 'song titles' entry ... partly because i think it's a better shot, partly because there are less than half the number of entries to compete against! haha.

it'd be nice to be able to enter both challenges though!

you mean 4 challenges per month
01/09/2007 10:18:32 PM · #3
yeah, hopefully ... but free members can only enter one challenge at a time.

The additional open challenge was added to try and cut down on the number of entries in a single challenge. Allowing people to enter both wouldn't help that any.

Of course, you could pony up for a membership and have challenges galore. ;)

It's to limit the number of entries to vote on. It's really tough voting on challenges that get up to 600-800 entries.

right - and there are two each week, so you can enter 4 a month, or pay the membership and enter 12 or so a month

i might be able to afford membership eventually. but at the moment, since i'm still starting out, i can't justify it!

i understand about the rules ... just didn't expect to be limited to a challenge per time. especially after two hours of shooting and editing an entry to a second challenge! :) LOL

im sure everyone would enjoy seeing the photo you will NOT be submitting to a challenge.

Its not just free members tho...........
I have entered the B/W portrait challenge and when I tried to enter the Song Title challenge, it wouldnt let me saying only one at a time.

When i last looked, I was a paid up member of DPC

If it makes you feel better... the restriction of entering only one "Exclusive Open" challenge applies not only to free Registered Users, but to paid Members as well. As mentioned above, this is to keep the number of entries in each Open challenge manageable.

Prior to the Exclusive Open challenges, there was only one Open challenge per week. We added a second, giving you a choice of topics -- but can still enter just one.

Hope that makes things clearer.

I had the same shock on the last pair of challenges, super-dave, so I totally understand. I had actually shot for both, processed both, and then uploaded... one!? But that's okay, I get to enjoy all this for free and I got some good ideas from the good people here on how to pick which one to enter - without showing my pictures!

There's a new challenge every week, and while that isn't quite enough to get my fix, it is a free privilege! And just because you can only enter one contest doesn't mean you can't shoot for both!

really?? um ... well that's not right ... glad i didn't buy a membership! sorry, but paying money = unlimited. i'd be annoyed if i couldn't enter a challenge after ponying up the cash.

anyone know why a member can't enter both challenges??

After voting ends, of course. We do ask that users avoid posting outtakes or unsubmitted entries until after voting ends. This is to avoid influencing the votes on other entries, and to ensure that the entries actually submitted to the challenge receive a fair shot at comments.

Again, to keep the number of entries in the Open challenges manageable. Members can enter as many Member challenges as they like. The only (sort-of) exception is Invitational challenges, which are open only to members who meet the Invitation criteria. Past examples have included members with 2 or more ribbons, members with no ribbons, members with more comments made than received, etc. These don't happen very often, though.

Remember that prior to us adding the Exclusive Open challenges, there was only one free Open Challenge each week. Now, you still get one free Open Challenge each week -- but you get to choose from two topics.

~Terry

(Edit: Added mention of Invitational challenges)

If it helps. I did ALL of this for my 1st challenge and the system actually ALLOWED me to submit to BOTH challenges only to have to pull one during voting. Talk about awkward. ;)

of course ... i wouldn't have done that anyway ... but being a free member, we don't get a gallery for such things, so i'd have to post it off my server! :)

There are also some SUPER nice people here, seems like at least once a month i see threads offering free memberships for various things, i was lucky enough to get one a little while ago, and im very thankful to the person that gave it. Heck, even paying the $$ it'll still be worth it.

my new year's resolution was to enter the Photo A Day challenge ... which i'm doing now @ //www.super-dave.com

and my second resolution was to enter at least one or two challenges a month ... i can still do that, so i'm happy!

Oh, that IS really awkward! You win. Did you at least get to pick which one to stay in?

I also was surprised to find out as a member I could not enter the open challenge. However, I understand your comments Terry. Thanks for clearing up the confusion.

Below is a photo I would have entered in “Centered Composition II.” Comments would be helpful.

Thanks
Bob
