Depth of field - the part of a shot that's in focus.

You've used it to good effect on a couple of your own shots;





You'll find the effect is harder to achieve on a P&S - You can get it best in macro mode.

P&S=point and shoot? :)

yeah, my camera has a digital macro mode, which is fun to play around with. :D
