Ok... I've put this off long enough, and I've decided to put off buying the flash, and finally upgrade my dam computer :P

I'm hoping to spend about $AUD1000. which is about $USD700 ish. I only want the box, or even less if i can get away with it. What specs would you reccomend? Machine is going to be used primarily for photoshopping, not games. In particular, what do you reccomend for the following?

- Motherboard
- CPU
- RAM
- Graphics card (do you need one for photshopping?)

These parts must be updated on my computer. Just to give you an idea, i'm currently using p4 1.6Ghz, w/512mb RAM :P

if like you said, you're going to use it mainly for photo editing, the specs really don't matter, as long as it is faster than your older computer's specs. But try to get more RAM, and a fast harddrive to speed up loading time (those darn RAWs).

You probably should invest in a good (and large) LCD screen too - try chipping some money off from the box's allocated amount.

Of course you do, how else would you see anything on your screen? LOL
seriously tho, photo editing is 2D so you dont have to get the best video card out there, coz they are usually racing for the best 3D performance, not 2D. 2D performance is pretty much at its best nowadays for all cards.

P4 3.4 or above
good motherboard, asus or similar quality
at least 1 gig of ram pref 2 or more ( its not too expensive if u shop around )
If updating your drives go for a good Sata drive

Would look at uprating you psu as well, as the higher end machines will draw off more power, and make sure it has a decent cooling system

You could probably subidize the cost by selling off your old box

I ran across this review from www.extremetech.com about building your own PC and getting the best "bang for your buck" around the time that I had decided I wanted to upgraded my home computer. I went with their recommendations for CPU (Core 2 Duo 6600), motherboard (ASUS P5B) and memory (2G OCZ Gold), but went with a cheaper video card (Nvidia 7300 based) because I don't do any gaming on this machine.

Anyway, check it out. The review is a few months old by now (Aug 2006) and things may have changed a little bit in the mean time. But the overall information is probably still good.

Just get the fastest processor (preferrably Dual Core) and as much RAM as you can, everything else, including the graphics card, get cheap.

Core 2 Duo E6600 and 2GB RAM - Decent Asus Mobo for easy Overclocking to over 3Ghz :)
