It looks like I might be submitting some photos to Alamy, and I have, perhaps, a standard question, but I haven't received a clear answer in searching through the forums.

I now have .tif files that are over 48 MB, but it says to send my initial CD with .jpg files, but it also says the files should be 48 mb, uncompressed.

When I convert these files to .jpg, they become far less than 48 mb.

So I guess I'm confused. I can see that many of you have done this before--any clarification?

Thanks heaps!

When you convert to JPG at quality 12 (highest) the files are smaller but Alamy accepts them. On the other hand, since you already have the TIFFs, why not just burn them on CD and send in the TIFFs. I sent TIFFs for my QC CD and all 10 were approved without delay.

Good Luck.

That's weird, though... looks like maybe they've updated their submission page? It really does appear like they're looking for 48 meg .jpgs?

The 48MB requirement is for uncompressed data. If you compress as JPEG or even compressed TIFF it will go down. 48MB works out to 16 mega-pixel. In Photoshop under the Image Size menu it will tell you the size of the uncompressed image. You can't look at the size of the saved file (unless you saved as uncompressed TIFF).

I was under the impression that Alamy only accepted .tif files and they had to be at least 48mb. I have been preparting my initial submission and I have been saving as tiff and then upsizing to reach the 48mb mark as they say on their website. Now I see they want jpg and not tiff. I guess I have to start all over again.

They're changing the submission over to jpg probably to accommodate the AlamyUpload they're planning on releasing. Makes more sense to upload a 3 to 12MB jpg that opens to 48mb than it would a 48mb tif in terms of FTP.

I had to go back and change my tifs to jpg as well. Sending the initial submission out this week.

On my initial submission I had upsized the TIFF to 48mb and then saved it to a JPG which did reduce it. I sent those in and emailed them asking if it was done right. They said it was exactly right. So to confirm if that is the proper method, I thought I would share with you all.

dsidwell - Hopefully I can clear this up for you. Saving your 48MB+ Tiff file as a JPEG (level 12 or highest) will create a smaller file size. The reason for that is due to compression. Alamy mention is their technical criteria that files need to be 48MB+ uncompressed. If you open up your smaller sized JPEG (mine end up ranging anywhere from 6MB to 12MB) in Photoshop you'll see that it will open back up as a 48MB+ file when uncompressed (i.e. look at the status bar at the bottom of the screen on the left hand side where it says "DOC:" and you'll see your magic number of 48MB+)
