I signed the lease today for the space for my studio! I was considering installing some kind of track system like such: //cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7534788175

B&H also carries something similar. Those motorized backdrop systems look pretty awesome, but they're pricey, and I don't have any canvases yet, so I don't know that I need to spend that much right now.

Currently, I just use a plain jane backdrop stand for both large paper rolls and my muslins.

So... I was just wondering if anyone had experience with these, if you liked them, hated them, use something else you love? I'm all ears.

Oh, and what color would you paint the walls? I'm thinking just plain white would be best for reflection. Would gray be better for the shooting room? Anyone?

I'm sure Cindi will be along, but she uses airplane wire to support her backdrops.

Hmmmm did someone call my name? :)

No seriously - airline cable - the heavy-duty stuff. You set hooks in the walls on either end, make loops in the ends of your cables and viola! :)

I would love a motorized set though, I've seen some that make me drool!, alas, out of my budget just now and the cables are soooooooo handy. I can have many layers of them for muslins, paper, etc.... works great and a box of cable lasts a zillion years and costs about $60.

Ammend to add: a backdrop stand is cool ... for ONE backdrop - but you get in trouble trying to change it often AND its bulky and rigid so moving it about in the studio isn't easy.

Thanks! Where do you get airline cable? The hardware store?

What about walls? White? Black? I think it would be hard to find the right gray...

Cable from Home Depot (or hardware store), be sure you get the clamp-thingy that makes loops on the ends (ask the people at the store). My walls are white because I wanted the room to look clean and kind of minimalist, but I've seen nice studios done wtih gray too. I wouldn't go with black, however, because it will eat up too much light and you'll have a hard time getting proper light on subjects.

I use a tracking system in the studio, but using my redneck skills I created a cool portable background stand. PVC pipe, quick creet, and 2 buckets, oh yea and some spray paint to give it a pro-look. pm me if you want the designs for the redneck -cheep and portable background stand. I will be happy to share it. Good luck Chris

How do you stretch out the backgrounds on this system when you want the backdrop to have not creases or lines?
