Go to a camera store and try these out. Whatever you buy - get the body and a separate good lens. I bought both cameras and prefer the Canon.

hold them BOTH in your hands with a lens on it and a card in them... then take pictures of whatever they'll let you take pics of in the store... so youare holding them for longer than 2 minutes... see which FEELS right in your hand, which you can use best
THEN go back and buy it

Both have their advantages. The 400D is newer and less likely to be replaced soon and has a higher MP count. However, it doesn't have spot-metering, if that is important to you. It's also a bit tiny.

Really it does boil down to what YOU feel best suits YOUR needs and what feels best in YOUR hands.

400d

D70 doesn't even compare, except in the grip, wich I hate on the Rebels.

Neither. If you are asking us to make your decision you are not ready to buy a camera. First go here and compare the cameras you might be interested in. //www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp

Next, got to a real camera store, not one of the big box jobs and try out the ones you are considering. Most camers stores will let you play with them, shoot some pictures and even take them out of the store for a litle bit. Try out the lenses, and other accessories you might be interested in. Then you are ready to make a choice that it right for you.

For me it was the Canon 30D. I liked the way it felt and the lay out of the controls was very natural. They stuck a battery grip on it and I fell in love. The 30D felt good, but a little small compared to my F2 with motor drive. The battey grip made it very stable as I knew I would be using a lot of long glass. I love it and have never looked back.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I have done as suggested and ended up buying a Nikon D40 instead of either of the 2 shortlisted cameras I had previously consicered. Am looking forward to getting some time to go out and shoot some images& start posting again to DPC Challenges.
