Is it worth the upgrade?

DL'd it to my desktop, worked like a champ. Tried to DL to laptop so when on trips, no go. Will not accept PS CS2 serial number. Calle Adobe, yup, bug in serial number part of CS3. It works sometimes and other times it doesn't. They have had lots of calls on it. Don't delete old versions, it looks great but still buggie. I was told CS3 would release 2nd fiscal quarter of 2007 .... so know all ya have to know is when Adobe starts their fiscal year ;)

Wow... I just watched the videos describing the new CS3 features. I had to wipe the drool off my keyboard. I'm excited, they've got some really ground breaking enhancements in the interface and in the tools!

Yes some very handy features although they forgot to include a drool cup.

Good news for people switching from Windows to Mac:

From an Adobe rep: "we're aware that a considerable number of Windows Photoshop users have gotten Macs and would like to try the new software on them, meaning they need a Mac CS3 serial number. We're going to enable that, but at the moment we need to make sure that earlier serial number problems have been addressed. We'd therefore appreciate it if people could hold off at least a few days before requesting a Mac serial number in exchange for their Windows serial.

Cool. Hope they do that for the non-beta CS3 upgrade too.

A new version of Photoshop is always a treat! But looking back over the past week since the CS3 beta was released, it seems obvious Adobe should have just offered the public a standard 30-day demo across the board rather than entering into this use-your-existing serial number fiasco. They've alienated customers on a number of levels, both by policy and by technical difficulties (CS1 users are shut out; until now Mac converts were shut out, even though this has not been fully addressed; glitches in the serial number generator, CS3 not accepting legit numbers, etc).

I'm an educational customer (for my own labs we spend five figures on Adobe suite software each upgrade cycle), but somebody in our university system got to the serial number generator before I, and therefore I cannot use the same legit number to activate my trial period. I've corresponded directly with Adobe personnel on their forum, sent in the email as instructed, and still no solution days later.

When does CS3 come out?
01/15/2007 11:46:33 PM · #13
I didn't see where Mr Sammon stated that CS3 would use system memory more efficiently than it's predecessor. I guess it can be assumed that it will still be a memory hog?

my bet is even more so

From a source they have stated 2nd quarter of 2007. They really mean the 2nd fiscal quarter of 2007. So my guess is their fiscal year started Oct 06.

Here's a real informal test done with the beta:

I first opened Task Manager without loading CS/2. It showed the amount of "commit memory" on my 2G system at 1,046,960K bytes. Then I loaded CS/2 with to edit a 9.5M jpeg and that number jumped to 1,263,136K bytes. I then closed CS/2, waited for the number to drop down to approximately the same amount as before. And then opened CS/3 to edit the same 9.5M jpeg and the number jumped to 1,266,860K bytes.

So it looks like the amount of memory used is similar ... at least at the default stage of opening up the editor with a single file loaded.

I've been playing around with it today and it does seem smoother. I think with smart layers turning things into vector format helps but then again I haven't tried several stacks of those mixed in with raster layers and such.

from what i hear on photoshop forums there are certain things that don't lag anymore and rendering is supposedly smoother...
