Do we still have a leader? I know there have been mumblings on the boards about people wanting to "join the club" and perform critiques. Is anyone responding to them?

If no one else cares, I volunteer to take up the slack...at least as far as keeping the group moving. I'm not saying I'm the best critiquer -- heck, I KNOW I'm not -- but at least I'm stepping up.

Or does the leader have to be a site admin?

The last I heard coordination of the CC had passed to ClubJuggle. I don't think you need be a site council member to perform coordinating duties, as it is a voluntary service performed by members, not a site "feature." Site code has been modified to accomodate its functions, but could be removed if the group dissolves.

Is ClubJuggle still around?

I spoke to him today. He's recently been moving house and had a heap of work, and to make it worse he doesnt get internet access back until later this week. I'm sure he'll be back around here pretty soon :)

I hope Terry will pick it back up and get it rolling again. It's not really Terry's fault that it's not being successful overall. There are a LOT of members of the CC and a large number of them don't do any/many critques. When I was handling it, there were a few people who did quite a few critiques and a LOT of people who did not. Quite a few of the members averaged less than one per week. You can keep signing up more and more people to try to handle the load, but at that point, it becomes rather useless to have the club.

Of course, a few comments are better than none. When I put this group together in the beginning, my objective was to get about 40 people who would be willing to do an average of 5 in depth critiques per week. That proved to be impossible.

I may offer to help Terry with this again when he comes back around.

John, did you upgrade to the EOS-10D recently? I thought you had a Sony 707 before?

I advised Terry to remove my name from the list as I have decided I enjoy giving critiques outside of the structure of CC more than I was enjoying participating in it.
However, since I haven't entered a challenge forever it's really just a formality to remove my name from the list.

As soon as I can catch up with Terry, I'm gonna offer to take this project again and try to get it rolling.

Good luck, according to Barb his new job is keeping him super busy, not even on AIM or Yahoo anymore ;( I'll also try to contact him and let him know you are looking for him.

Would be great if you could get it up and running again John (no slight on Terry intended at all) as I think a lot of people are hoping it will come back to life :)

I have always made it a point to try to leave a few comments in each challenge as part of the critique club, but the problem has nothing to do with Terry or John or who is in charge. As long as the helpful comments box is there and no one is checking them after a critique. it does make you want to stop spending the extra time leaving comments. I even have came across people who do not check off a single box as helpful, and as I read them I find myself thinking oh yeah that was really helpful, too bad the person isn't kind enough to check it off as helpful. I don't do nearly as many critiques as I did this summer, I just don't feel all that appreciated.

Well, there have been several times I received comments weeks after the close of a challenge and never knew of them for quite some time. Is there an alert to tell us of a new comment that I am unaware of?

I don't mean those kind of comments...I'm talking about the comments during the challenge and within say the first week after it ends...The normal time in which the comments are made.

I send an email to everyone I comment on through the CC and STILL get no response what so ever on a lot of them, not even a thanks for looking. It does get frusterating. Usually when you ask for something, when you get it, you say thank you. That's not happening and it does affect things.

This has been discussed over and over again also. If you are expecting to get something from the photographer for your critique effort, you are wasting your time. If you intend to improve your own photography by critiquing photos, then you will enjoy the CC.

Which is why I continue to critique. If I were to get upset every time I didn't receive a thank you, I'd have given up a long time ago.

I still believe that critique and comments I have made have been my single greatest stepping stone in improving my own photography.

After I joined I sent the specified note to join the critique club and I did not recieve any answer. I assumed they were DOA. Not to mention I've checked the Critique requested box on every submission since I joined, and haven't seen one from the critique club.

I have sent email to Terry to ask if I could take this over again. If he accepts my request, I will start looking at what has been going on in the last few months and we will re-vamp from scratch after that.

If any CC member has any suggestions, please post them here.

Setz has already mentioned that if you are doing it for the praise then you're doing it for the wrong reason. But other reasons why people may not mark CC comments as helpful because 1) they didnt look at old entries and/or dont click on the number of comments they've received in their profile, 2) they didnt find the comment helpful - just because someone from the CC left a comment doesnt automatically make it helpful, or 3) they dont believe in the helpful comment box and never use it.

Something to consider..

When I first joined and saw the box to check if I wanted an indepth critique, I assumed it was just something that came with the account.. part of what you pay for. I checked it with each submission but didn't get a critique.

Then I started reading the forums and realized that the Critique Club is a group of volunteers having nothing to do with my paid account. There may be something that explains this but I didn't see it.

My thinking is that if others see this the way I did at first, rather than being appreciative when they do receive a critique, they may be thinking they aren't "getting their money's worth" when they don't get a critique.

Maybe we need an explanation regarding this? Possibly make the words "indepth critique" in that line clickable and link it to an explanation of what the Critique Club is?

Just a thought

I am in no way saying I want praise for doing a cc but a little consideration would be appreciated. Possibly we need a box to check that simply states yes I read this comment.

I don't mind doing CC's each week, I even had a fellow CC member email me after about a week to find out why I didn't check off his cc as being helpful. I couldn't appologize to him enough cause I accidently forgot to check it off. Sometimes that silly box is a pain in the butt it even makes me wonder if my comment is even being read. I spend my own time during the week to do CC's at least knowing that the person receiving them is reading them would be helpful.

Only a natural "judge" could have written something like that, even if behind the learning aim there could be also a feeling to compete.

Before building my own site and starting looking into some live statistics, I had the suspect that "judges" are much rarer than "challengers" (and numbers seems to confirm that).

To judge requires maturity and wisdom (not to mention other important attributes related to the matter of what is being judged).

To challenge, firstly and before anything else, requires the energy we all had in our childhood.

Why am I writing about this?

But because I am just doing propaganda for my new website, of course. ;)

I haven't received any response from Terry yet. I will wait a bit longer.
