I am so excited. Just got word that I placed SECOND for the U.S. in the 2006 Costco Wholesale International Photo Contest.

I wasn't even sure I was going to enter after reading this thread:

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=445038&highlight=costco%20photo%20contest

Anyway, here's the one I entered:

Second Place was $1,000!!!! I'm a HAPPY GUY!!

Hey, that rocks! So, what kinda gear you gonna get with $1,000? ;-)

Congratulations on your placement in the Costco Contest. The first place must really be out of this world to out-score your incredible iamge.

Really, really nice.

Thanks. Years ago I carried TWO camera bags full of lenses and equipment when I traveled.. don't want to do that anymore.. I like things simpler in my "old" age... but I'm thinking about a wide angle lens for my S3. Have to do some reseach. I can put that lens in my pocket!

Wow Roland, that is an amazing photo. Congrats on your prize!

Thank you all.

It's interesting to note (at least to me!) that when I entered this shot in our County Fair, it didn't even get an Honorable Mention. (Fortunately, I DID enter two pictures, and got a Blue for the other one!)

How exciting! Congratulations and a well deserved win. That's a major accomplishment and I hope you really celebrate!

WTG Roland, it's fantastic and great that they're giving cash awards instead of lame cameras. ;-) I'm really surprised that one didn't make the cut in your county contest.

Me too. But one of the "extras" is a Fuji "One Use" camera... Can't see myself using FILM :)

And I think the Fair was just a matter of not knowing the market.. I live in a pretty agricultural area, with COWS, NOT GIRAFFES.

Congratulations! Incredible shot! That photo is a fine example that you don't need a fancy dslr with all the trimmings to take a beautiful photo.

Thanks. I appreciate it. But it sure would't hurt!

And thanks to all who left comments.

Don't get me wrong the picture is great but no one obviously told the judges what the theme was. the entry rules state.

"The theme of the contest is 'Give Us Your Best Shot', Winning entries will be those that best reflect the theme."

While i think you photo is great and deserves many awards, I don't think that it reflects the theme whatsoever. I was excited about the contest but have lost respect. If they are planning on just picking the best photo then don't need to state a theme. Unless you think that "give us your best shot" means send in your best picture in which Im sure the costco execs would have not made the named theme the only stipulation in winning the contest because there would be no way for you to guarantee you are actually sending in your best shot and not your second best or third... Sorry, just wish I had'nt spent so much time trying to fullfil the requirements and just sent in my BEST SHOT! Ill know next year they don't take there rules to seriously.

What did you think it meant? Just from reading what you posted I would've assumed they wanted what I thought was my best shot also.

Perhaps I am tired and am missing something, but exactly what part of "Give Us Your Best Shot" did you not understand.

Congratulations Roland on a beautiful image.

I suspect what Josh is getting at is, if the "theme" is "Give Us Your Best Shot" and the winner is the one that best reflects that theme, then technically the winning photo should have been a shot of someone handing his/her entry to the judges...

To be honest, I'm not sure if he meant that post tongue-in-cheek; myself, I think it's pretty funny :-)

And oh yeah, congrats on the $1000 winner!

Are you guys for real? when there is a "theme" usually themes are slightly broad in nature and then artists are encouraged to test the variations of what the theme might be eluding to or is actually encouraged to be explored based upon the phrase. "Give us your best shot" is in parenthesis for a reason. It is a phrase that is supposed to be explored not interpreted literally. if the idea of the contest was for everyone to send in there best photo then that is what they would have said; Not, "Here is the theme, "XXXXXX" no the best picture that best represents the theme will win."

Do you understand now? " give us your best shot, could be a snow ball fight, kids running with a soccer ball, flock of birds flying over head.

I hope im not the only one that get s the idea here????

Let me know if you get it -- I've been thinking about it as well.

Congratulatons -- great shot and a great award! Does this mean we'll see that shot on their (Costco's) signage?

Not to rain on your parade here, but the photo looks strangely processed. Did you do anything to it? Or maybe it is the resize or something?

Congrats anyway!!!

Great, great photo, it looks fabulous and well worthy of awards IMO.

As for the issue about theme, I would have read that as 'submit your best photo', as you did. And clearly that was what as intended as you came 2nd.

I think had it stated the theme was 'give IT your best shot (instead of 'give US your best shot'), then you could argue that you should be looking at pictures of snowball fights etc.

To me it looks like Joshreeder is the one who 'misinterpreted' the theme on this one,
