I thought I'd share my first time shooting basketball. I'd love C&C. I get to try hockey tonight for the first time too! Any tips?
The rest of the shoot is here.
And my other sports shots are here.
Thanks for looking! |

Think the one you shot at 1.8 with the 85mm is the best of the four. The dof really focuses the eye on the action. |

Looks like fun. I also like the one you shot at 1.8 with the 85mm best.
I was also wondering if you were using AF or manual focus?

Thanks,
I used the center autofocus point in servo AF. I just got the 85 and love the speed, both AF and 1.8, but the focal length is a bit long on my XTi. I'm still figuring out how to best use it.

The 85mm one is so crisp it's great.
I agree with routerguy about the nice dof effect aswell. Makes the players stand out.

Great captures, Nick. I especially like the f1.8 shot. How did you shoot during the game--aperture priority? The ISO 1600 shot looks good, too--with minimal noise.

How did you manage or set your white balance? I took some with a D70 last week and had some issues with it. |

Your pictures are fantastic!! It helped me to see what settings you used. I don't have the lense, but I can play around with percents of your settings. |

With the 85 I shot Manual 1.8 or 2.0, 1/400 or 1/500, at 400 or 800 ISO. 1600 was needed to even get 1/250 with the 70-200 f4. Neat Image really helped clean up the 1600 shots (but the xti does a pretty good job to begin with).
I'm thinking about the 70-200 2.8, but I wonder if a couple of other primes might be a better choice. I expect to be shooting a lot of indoor sports over the next couple of months. |

Auto WB. I did the best I could to correct in DPP or Lightroom when I got home. Moastly just cooling a bit and desaturating magenta. |

Another question-I a using this D70 with the option to buy for 400.00, but I am really being drawn to the Rebel XTI. Any thoughts? I read that you have the XT and the XTI. This will be my first real purchase. I know that they are going to be discounting the price of the XT soon and some major department stores. |

There are as many opinions here as photographers on this site.
I originally chose the original DRebel for it's high ISO performance and Canon's lens lineup. I've been with canon since. I haven't had much chance to use other cameras, so I can't really compare them.
I will say that the XTI has impressive (to me) high ISO performance compared to previous Drebels(although it's still limited to 1600 unlike some more expensive models). The reason I upgraded though was the incorporation of the 20D/30D autofocus.
For most shooting, either camera should do a superb job.
Not much help, huh? |

Yes, thank you. I mainly got a digit camera for the sole purpose of taking photos of my children's sporting events. So the ISO performance is very important. Thank you. |

If you shoot in RAW, then WB is not a critical at capture time since it can be adjusted in your RAW converter (e.g. ACR).

It's a great lense. First thing I grab when I need something fast, or just want to give the 24-105 a break. |

Sounds like either the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 is the way to go. The f/1.8 is a lot cheaper than the 70-200 f/2.8, the 50 f/1.4 is affordable. But if money is no object, there's a 50mm 1.2L :-)
Also, if 85mm is too long, consider the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 rather than a 70-200.

You may want to shoot a little lighter, maybe as much as + 1 stop at the ice game as the ice is a very light background.
Good luck with that,
Good basketball pics!
