Looking to get one for Jenn for Christmas. Anybody have any good recommendations on one?

Wi-fi would be nice.
resolution is probably more important than actual size, but 6-8" on the wide dimension would be good.

I saw a couple of these on the shelf of the local camera store last week and I'm planning to get one for my wife and my parents. Wi-fi was not an option on the one I looked at.

Linked at Amazon, this
is the one I looked at in the store. Reading the reviews on Amazon, there are some issues with quality control and longevity. I'm still going to give it a try.

I got a Kodak 8" frame for my Mom on sale at Target a couple days ago for $149 (link takes you to the ad, you have to input your zip code to view and it's in the lower left. Also plays mp3's and video.

Costco carries a 7" frame, with remote and 256MB internal memory (also takes memory cards) for $115.

I've looked at a lot of these over the last few years and even designed and built my own one as a market prototype.

Most of the affordable ones (at least up to a year ago) had really disappointing screens (a lot of them were 16 bit colour (as opposed to most monitors that are 24 or 32 bit colour) so your images end up with some posterisation. Also the displays are often 4x6 but with a smaller actual area.

Other than that a lot of the frames are just tacky - best to get one you can re-frame in a decent mount.

I'd really like one with a great LCD, about 5x7 and internet capable (without having to pay a monthly subscription) so I can upload shots to it. I'd love to give my parents one like that - so they just have to plug it in and forget about it. Even the larger panels are pretty low resolution - e.g., the 8x10s that are often still VGA. Big, visible pixels there at 64dpi.

The one I built was slightly better but I haven't found a good place to buy one. Maybe it is better this year. If you want to build your own, here's a large part of the design.

A while back I read a howto on dismantling an old laptop and building a frame around it. Basically, keep the computer working and use a screensaver to flip photos! Add a cheap wifi card and you're good to go.

I can't find the exact article now, but a swift google turned up plenty of examples.

I remember seeing that before, was quite neat, though laptop displays other than the more recent models have disappointing quality, particularly in the dark point/ contrast.

The nice feature of using a more dedicated embedded controller is the lack of fans, harddrives etc making your wall produce whirring noises and a lot of heat to dissipate.

Well, I went with this one from Philips. Probably for the name (one I at least know) and the USB connectivity. It isn't wireless though.

I received a promotional email from mwave with this unit this morning. Actually looks like a nice combination of size and resolution, and the price is not bad at all. I have neer heard of the brand, though, and have no idea how reliable they are.

Good price, and 1280x1024 sounds really nice for an 8" frame. The 8 incher I got for my Mom is 800x600, and I thought that was nice.

I got a chuckle out of the brand name "Fuchiview" :-)
